'Marlboro Country' Montana Gets Smoking Ban

HELENA, Mont. — Montana, which has served as Marlboro Country in magazine ads depicting rugged cowboys puffing on cigarettes while riding a fence line, is about to outlaw smoking just about everywhere but the great outdoors.

The state Legislature voted Thursday to ban smoking in all enclosed public places, including bars and restaurants.

The Senate approved the measure 40-10 on Thursday. It passed the House last month.

Gov. Brian Schweitzer (search) said he will sign it. Montana (search) will become one of just 10 states to ban smoking on such a widespread scale. California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island have similar laws.

As an aside - hubby ordered cigars tonight and Thompson cigars is still accepting credit card orders online..........things that make you go HMMMMMMM.....

Remember last week I said I made another order for loose tobacco and filtered tubes on line last week? It came yesterday. So, delivery in my state is still safe, no matter WHAT the lawmakers spew.

Another point to be brought up is: if second hand smoke is so deadly, why don't we see cancer in children of smokers? After all, they are exposed to YEARS of it, not from being in a bar or restaurant for a few hours.

The original "deaths from SHS" was 3000/year. This wasn't "scary" enough, so they now claim it is 50,000/year. Well, that's more than the number of people who die in auto accidents per year. Ask any ER physician how many accident victims he's treated, then ask how many people he's treated for SHS. I will bet a million dollars it's zero.

And what about pets that live in homes with smokers for 14 plus years.  They have real little lungs.  Yet they live to a ripe old age.  I never had a pet that died young.  And my pets are all indoor pets.

I have one daughter that grew up in a household of two smokers.  And she is healthy as a peach.  She has worked out in a gym for over 10 years.  Strong as an ox.

Oh yes, and did I mention she smokes? hehe!

One of my daughters ran several marathons and knew a gal who was a great runner and would end her run with a smoke.

I still think the genes have an awful lot to do with it,but you'll never see that posted by the antis.

Peter Jennings is 67,Johnny Carson was 79,and yet some posters here are blaming the cigs.

Don't they get it? THAT'S WHEN PEOPLE START TO DIE---I have lost lots of friends in the past 10 years, some smoked, some were ex-smokers,and some never smoked.

No smoker awould ever say that smoking is good for us,it's just not as bad as they say.

My conclusion is that the credit card thing is ONLY for cigarettes.......not tobacco products in general.

As to delivery in your state being safe - Thompson Cigars will not ship orders to Maine.

I'm still trying to get answers from some companies, including Thompson about all this and have to start a new round of phone calls to those who have not returned my initial calls.

I won't take your bet - because I know you are correct.

The SHS bravo sierra came into play when the nannies realized they weren't going to cow enough into quitting smoking. By claiming smokers were "killing" others they figured they could get more mileage out of their treadmill.

They found that particular piece of BS to work and have steamrolled it into what it has become today.

But even worse is that they have also formulated a strategy that is being used for many other things - think the "obesity epidemic"

I danced from age 8 to age 26 when I got married.  I turned professional at age 16.  Same time I started to smoke.  Since I was in tip top shape from dancing, I was never winded from smoking.  Never.  So I know what you mean about your daughters smoking and being able to run marathons.

No smoker awould ever say that smoking is good for us,it's just not as bad as they say.

No, but when they start lying about everyone dying young because they started smoking really makes my fur fly.

Let's not get into the pet area.......the antis are already pushing that.

Every single pet I have ever had (except a carnival won goldfish) has lived well past the life expectancy of it's breed.......and all have been in smoker friendly homes.

I seriously doubt SHS has anything to do with the hip displasia (sp?) and arthritis my 13 year old lab/chessie is dealing with.

Oh I doubt that very seriously.

Pets get that from old age or arthritis like us.

You are right - but to hear the antis rant and rave one would thing that smokers claim it cures all ills.

We all can't live vice-free lives - everyone has their particular vice or vices...mine happen to be caffeine, alcohol and nicotine (in that order)....you don't want to talk to me in the morning before I've had coffee or a soda. But I can go days with out either of the others.

I'm not stupid - I know smoking is not really a healthy habit, but neither is drinking beer or coffee, or indulging in whole host of other pleasurable HABITS. I like it - I do it - it's legal (for now)

It's a good thing we don't live in Delaware anaymore - they don't deliver there either.

The ones in here sure love to call us vile names.  Attack us about our hygiene and how we stink and have yellow snaggly teeth.  They have never seen us and I keep telling them that I bet they have habits that I would find disgusting.  But they don't have a come-back for that. :)

Personal hygiene is the key.  It's like:  if you don't wash out ashtrays, they are going to stink.  And if we go three days without a bath, we are going to stink.  Goodness.

That Wild Man 10?  He thinks I live in a double wide filled with smoke.  haha!!!
