Move the U.N.?
JWR ^ | 4-7-05 | Victor Davis Hanson

Americans grew up with kind feelings toward the United Nations. Many remain nostalgic about their childhood UNESCO Halloween buckets and UNICEF Christmas cards. Such goodwill explains why we host the organization and cover a quarter of its operating budget.

The U.N. arose out of the ashes of World War II and was the dream of Western idealists who sought to enact liberal notions of human rights and jurisprudence on a global scale.

Only a humane transnational body, it was felt, could avoid a repeat of the 50 million lives lost in World War II. A Security Council of great powers was to add muscle to resolutions — avoiding the irrelevance of the defunct League of Nations, which had proved impotent in the face of fascist aggression. And this time, the world body would be located right smack in Manhattan, symbolizing the American commitment to world arbitration in lieu of our prior isolationism.

Well, here we are in 2005 with nearly 60 years of the U.N. — and more people have been lost in wars since 1945 than during World War II itself. Americans now distrust the U.N.'s record as much as they might applaud its idealism in theory. Why?

A half-century of Soviet bloc politics poisoned the body. Dictatorships that had killed millions of their own won an equal say to many Western democracies. Third-World countries were silent about the 80 million butchered by Stalin and Mao — and the millions more lost in tribal and religious wars in Africa and Asia.

Instead, over 400 U.N. resolutions gratuitously targeted tiny democratic Israel — without equal condemnation of its autocratic neighbors or commensurate concern for China's annexation of Tibet or Russia's absorption of the disputed Sakhalin Islands.

Thanks for the post. Very good article. Checks and balances? The fact that "what's it all about?" Kofi is still heading up United Criminals speaks for itself.

Good post.

I wish that we would stop talking and writing about it and move them out. Call in their occupancy of the building they are trashing, and hold their annual dues from us until they relocate in a more 'necessary' spot in the world so they can view their disasters first hand.

No more UN in USA!!

Robert Mugabe, the thug running Zimbabwe gets a vote. The democratic Taiwan is not allowed in.

Move the UN to Jerusalem. Make it an international city, by law open to all. And that must include ALL sites, including the Temple Mount being open to anyone who want to go there.

Anyone committing a crime within the confines of the international city is subject to their own laws, so an Israeli under Jewish (Talmudic?) law, a Muslim under Sharia law, but the VICTIM'S people get to administer that justice.

Provide for a presence by both Jews and Arabs to use it as a shared capital for their countries, side by side. Require all UN diplomats to live within the confines of the city (say, for example, that they don't have diplomatic immunity outside the city limit).

Make Kofi and Kojo responsible for paying for it all out of Oil for Food funds that they scammed or allowed others to scam (minus what Donald Trump pays for the land the current UN is located on, of course).

That'll piss everybody off, equally.

Hey, I can dream, can't I?

UNICEF! I've never had any warm, nostalgic feelings towards that outfit.

A couple of my friends were John Birchers in the 1960's (and there are a few still working) and kept me informed of the U.N. rip-offs. Never joined because I didn't like having doors locked during meetings. But, looking back, it was for members' protection.

Birchers were ridiculed at every turn as nutty, fanatical fruitcakes.

Let that be a lesson. Those who speak up for the Constitution, God, and the love of our country, aren't trying to bring ruin - just the opposite. It's those who would undermine the foundation of our great nation who are the traitors.
