80%: Non-Terminal Patients Should Not be Denied Food, Water; Three-to-One: Feeding Tube Should Stay in Place When Wishes Unknown; Americans Divided on Intervention by Elected Officials, Christian Defense Coalition / Zogby Poll of Likely Voters Reveals
A poll completed after the controversial death of Terri Schiavo finds that eight-in-ten (80%) likely voters say that a disabled person who is not terminally ill or in a coma, and not being kept alive by life support should not, in the absence of a written directive to the contrary, be denied food and water. By a three-to-one (44% to 14%) margin, likely voters say that, when there is conflicting evidence on the wishes of a patient, elected officials should order that a feeding tube remain in place. The survey, conducted by Zogby International on behalf of the Christian Defense Coalition, was conducted March 30 to April 2, 2005 and has a margin of error of +/-3.2 percentage points.
The same poll also finds a majority (56%) agree that Schiavos husband Michael should have turned guardianship for the severely-disabled woman over to her parents based on his decision to have a long-term serious relationship with another woman. By a two-to-one (44% to 24%) margin, with one-in-three (32%) undecided, the survey finds that an incapacitated person should be presumed to want to live in the absence of written instructions such as a living will.

Likely voters in the survey are closely divided on a number of other issues, including whether it is proper for the federal government to intervene in a case similar to Schiavos. When asked if it is proper for federal officials to intervene when disabled people are denied food and water by a state court judge, respondents were deadlocked, with 44% favoring such intervention, and 43% opposed. The survey did find overwhelming consensus, however, when the question turned to government intervention in cases where basic civil rights were being denied. Three-quarters (74%) of likely voters say that it is proper for the federal government to intervene in such a case; just one-in-five (19%) disagree. Zogby International conducted interviews of 1019 likely voters nationwide on behalf of the Christian Defense Coalition. All calls were made from Zogby International headquarters in Utica, N.Y., March 30 through April 2, 2005. The margin of error is +/-3.2 percentage points. Slight weights were added to region, party, age, race, religion, and gender to more accurately reflect the voting population. Margins of error are higher in sub-groups.

when there is conflicting evidence on the wishes of a patient, elected officials should order that a feeding tube remain in place.Ah, but what of those judges who are not elected, but are selected, and chose then to rule tyrannically?
Can those blacked robed gods end life?

Thank you for posting, FairOpinion.
I believe most Americans, even self-avowed liberals, are more moral-minded than the MSM would like us to believe.
This increases my hope all the more.

I can only state everyone that has approached me about Terri has been sickened by what occured. Someone just today railed against the Judiciary's will being stronger than both of the other branches that defended this woman's life. And he's typically a Democrat in voting pattern.
IMO, there is a real downside to the MSM faking opinions on this matter. Aside from the role it played in brining about a woman's Death. It leads people to believe their position is stronger or weaker than it may be, and they operate off of this false presumption. If you do what is right, 8 out of 10 you'll be rewarded no matter what the "polls" forecast.

Many people I work with were not phased at all by Terri's starvation death; in fact, they were practically happy about it. Scary.

Thanks, I think more highly of my fellow citizens. Strange how polls results can change depending on how the question is asked. Bet a lot of people thought she was terminal or in a coma.Amen. My middle name, literally, is Hope. But after those first polls, it was sagging bad

Guess killing disabled people doesn't register as a basic civil rights issue. This is most troubling to say the least.

"I can only state that everyone that has approached me about Terri has been sickened by what occurred." I can report the same here. Everyone who has said anything about Terri to me, including people that normally don't pay attention to anything,( political or otherwise) said they were sickened, shocked, and frightened, by what happened to Terri.
It's nice to see a poll with more realistic results. I was losing faith in my fellow man.
I hope the politician's see this, so they don't wimp out about addressing the very, very, serious issues that have been raised by Terri's tragedy.

The most interesting question to me, and the most important, was not asked. Which is, should people be starved/dehydrated to death, if they left clear directions that is what they wanted if they were in a PVS?

Personally, I am still mystified as to why polls should be relevant when moral absolutes are in question.
Polls are for things like your favorite flavor of ice cream or what kind of car you drive, not decisions of life and death.

I think a lot of polls lost creditability in 2004 like the Fox News poll (no better then ABC)
To: FairOpinion
I think Zogby oversampled Democrats in the election -- or he used the "right method", but many more Republican voters turned out, than his model told him.Actually, the numbers were pretty much consistent, because the fluctuations (for the most part) were taking place within the margin of error. Those who say "polls don't vote, people do" are always proven wrong. Kerry basically shot himself in the foot again and again, and that's why Bush began gaining momentum.
Getting back to the Terri Schiavo case, here's one part of that poll, which I found disturbing:
Elected officials should intervene to protect a disabled person's right to live if there is conflicting testimony concerning removing a feeding tube?
38% Agree
54% Disagree
Going by the results of this poll, then, people think it's OK to intervene on behalf of the civil rights of anyone...provided they're not disabled. In which case, let 'em rot....
Well, isn't that special!

I knew the Terry Shiavo opinion polls were complete garbage. I said so on this forum.
A bigger concern, however, is the fact that Mr. Frist seems to think that the nazi judges in this case "did the right thing."
We're stuck with Trent Lott's hairpiece in the Senate.

O'Reilly has shown his true colors. When he comes on the tv or radio, I can not get to the knob to switch his 'spin' off fast enough.

Maybe the politicians would have really fought harder for her. You mean the panderers? The ones who have been a majority of the entire government, federal and state, for years and years and years--and who have yet to take a stand worthy of the support we have given them? Reagan said it best--government is the problem. If you think you still have a constitution, try to pray where ever you want, carry a gun where ever you want, or criticize a sitting politician however you want. The central government is in a mopping up operation. We're only a few years away from the constitution itself being declared unconstitutional. This aint about judicial tyranny. All three branches figured it out long ago--the executive and the legislative, by their inaction, create a power vacuum for the unelected to fill. Everyone's happy. The American sheeple are catatonic and fat, and all three branches are impervious to criticism. Congresspersons are re-elected 96% of the time. They are immune. Judges--immune. The president--all but useless anyhow, because only a rare gem like Reagan can get anything done. The entire government is entrenched, and they throw us stupid fights like memo scandles to keep us partisan while they use our support to destroy us. Terri's murder shows one thing only--the entire government is against us.
