Schiavo memorial exhorts hundreds to go forward

GULFPORT - The Rev. Frank Pavone asked a packed church on Tuesday night to honor the memory of Terri Schiavo by going forth and building a "culture of life."

Pavone, to much applause, emphasized that all life is sacred, that all lives have meaning, no matter what form they come in.

"God calls on us to go forth from this place to work together, to preach and witness together," Pavone boomed, a bank of Easter lilies behind him, "so what happened in this tragic case will never happen again."

Pavone and several other speakers elicited applause, even standing ovations, from the 700 people who overflowed onto the steps outside the Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church for Schiavo's memorial service.

Schiavo died Thursday, 13 days after the court-ordered removal of her feeding tube. Her plight, and the struggle between her husband and her family, made headlines around the world and drew hundreds of strangers in the past few weeks to the Pinellas Park hospice where she eventually died.

None of the speakers mentioned Michael Schiavo, the husband who argued for years that his wife would not have wanted to be kept alive, given the brain injuries she sufferred. Terri was referred to by her maiden name, Terri Schindler, throughout the service.

Many in attendance Tuesday had never met Terri Schiavo. They came in support of her family. "I know I speak for millions when I say to you tonight four simple words," Pavone said to the Schindler family seated in the front row. "We are with you."

Schiavo's brother, Bobby Schindler, had trouble beginning his rememberence to his sister. After choking back tears, he held up a Purple Heart sent to the family by a Vietnam War veteran. The sender indicated that Schiavo was killed by enemies of the United States, and thus, deserved the award, Schindler said to a standing ovation.

Suzanne Vitadamo, Terri Schiavo's sister, turned to her mother and said she ached for her the most. She praised Schiavo for setting an example of how to fight.

"You have shown the world what perseverance and determination are all about," Vitadamo said.

Radio talk show host Glenn Beck, who in recent years has supported the Schindlers' fight to keep Schiavo alive, stopped repeatedly to wipe away tears as he spoke to the congregation.

He focused on how Schiavo's case brought together a mix of supporters that spanned the political spectrum. Republican U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay and conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh were on the same side as liberal activist and actor Susan Sarandon and former Democratic presidential contender Jesse Jackson, Beck pointed out.

"Terri is performing her first miracle," Beck said.

Schiavo's body was cremated after an autopsy. A court order gave Michael Schiavo control of his wife's body, though he must inform her parents of any memorial services and the location of the cemetery. The court order does not say how much notice Michael Schiavo has to give the Schindler family. He has said he will bury his wife's remains in a plot in Pennsylvania. "The (Schindler) family is basically at the mercy of (Mr. Schiavo) showing kindness," the Schindlers' lawyer, David Gibbs III, said before attending the service. "If he chooses to inflict additional pain, that's his choice

Breaks my heart to see him suffer like that. I can only imagine what it must be like to watch helplessly, while someone who ISN'T BlOOD sends a sibling to his or her death.

Absolutely heart wrenching. God bless the Vet, he understands, unlike those who refer to her as Terri 'the husk', Terri, 'the vegetable', Terri, the 'houseplant and mascot.' God rest her defenseless soul.

I've seen or heard some interview that said Bobby and Terri were very close.

i can't imagine what life is like now for michael schiavo

It's just beginning for Mikey. He's just now feeling the cold wind that will blow throughout his sorry "life".

He's starting to think about it...what happened here...why are people looking at me? Why, just a little while ago I had the judges and the police on my side...now they don't talk to me...what happened? I was a big man. In control of everything!

And so it will go. The world will be foreign to him. Every time he meets someone new, they will visibly change when they hear his name....even where he works, now there will be a strange attitude on everyone's part...whispers..."sorry Mike, I can't go...someother time, huh?"....on and on. Over and over.

He'll find no comfort except with those who have none. Slowly the thug brain will realize he was used....and now they're finished with him. He'll realize that he never had any power, that he won't control another person's life like that ever again, that he's not only nobody now, he's worse...he's a nobody that no one wants to know. That they will walk a mile to the right or left of just to not see him.

Hell will be where he is. Right there, his existence.

Slowly it will happen. But it will happen...

You wrote: I can understand Michael S. not wanting people to make pilgrimages to Terri's grave site, but he could have at least found some place in Florida with guards to prevent anyone but her family from visiting the grave. The man is without mercy.

My Reply: Plese don't take this, how shall I say, confontational. I beg your pardon, He imprisoned her in a cell in the Hospice for, I can't remember at least 3 years, so that no one could visit her and testify to her real condition.

Now in her death, you recomend armed guards to keep "the public" away. Excuse me while I puke. How much more "controle" do you think the Husband (In Name only) has earned. Even AFTER her death the Husband (again in name only) should control who visits her grave????? Barf, Barf, Barf.

Again not confontational but pahleeeeeze re-consider your position.

Floriduh Voter has posted that this is a bogus photo. It was not taken this year. Just a FYI so you don't continue to re-post. It is form 2003 when her feeding tube was removed.

Do I feel sorry for the HINO? Nope. He deserves everything he's going to get (spiritually speaking). I have a sneaky feeling that during the "death process" the HINO got more than he bargained for. Felos was drooling. The HINO had to watch that, too. Yuck!!!!

STOP posting this picture and saying this was her on the 13th day with out food and water. This picture was proven to be a phony!! It was a picture of Terri, but was taken in 2002. When Terri died her hair was longer and going gray. Blogforterri.com has confirmed that this pic was not a pic of Terri while dying.

The Pope in his failing health reached out in her defense. The two are part of the best, the highest plan.

And inspired by them, and by Father Pavone and Bobby, we do indeed go forward in strength.

While the dark side's road map to hell is written in Mikey's eyes:

Nobody will be starved of his just desserts.

That is a monumental insult to our soldiers.

No, don't think it will haunt them in the least. You have to have a heart, a conscience, and morals. If it had the possibility of haunting him, he never would have treated her family as he has.

He even denied Terri the right to have her mother by her side as she died. Instead Terri had Michael.

But, he will have to answer for this from the true Judge.

This photo was from when her tube was pulled in 2003? Then this is only day 6 or before. Day 13 would have to be too graphic to post.

I do agree with your post. I have had those thoughts about mikey's future life, after all the pseudo threats have gone, after he pockets the life insurance money, after he gets his book deals and interviews all over with, after it is all said and done...there will be three...

mikey his brother and sister-in-law, who all conspired, imo, to crush terri.

jodi is in trouble. big trouble.

Because for her, after the money, after the kudos from other monsters have lost their glow, she is faced with living with one of the most notorius and cowardly men alive.

Her children will become curious and search out what happened to terri when they are older, she will always, always have to bend to mikey's wishes and obey him like a slavish concubine..because that is what she will always be...there cannot be a marriage approved by God when those wishing to join conspired to kill. At least that is what I believe.

Michael is a murderer. But I am not sure, even after the torture of dying thirsty, that those 13 days were her worst.

I believe (and I mean strongly believe) that terri's worst moments were EVERY SINGLE DAY of her life after the accident when she had to suffer being silenced in order for her sociopathic, out of control contoller be remain the free subhuman he is.

Every time he walked into her room...I just cannot help but believe it was sheer hell for her.

I believe he inflicted not only the worst, torturous mental torture to this helpless, wonderful child of the Schindlers, but I believe he hurt her physically as well.

And I believe the tried to do the same thing to the Shindlers.

He is a small man, an unstable man, basically a freak (ie his interview with larry king in his puke yellow shiney shirt, with his gold chain and his horrifically deformed face) because his capacity for cruelty ranks him at the top of the any scale that denotes abhorrent behavior.

He is going to wallow in a life so barren of real friendship...so barren of respect and companionship...so barren of all the good stuff we evidenced everyday from the shindlers...it will be unbearably lonely...far worse than the lonelinenss he subjectged terri to...FAR WORSE.

Worse, terri won in the end.

Her cry was heard across the world not only from supporters of her family, the Schindlers, but from the VATICAN in Rome ...she had the LAST WORD. Terri Schindler's fight for life was on the mouth of her beloved POPE!

In a very big way!

And at that moment, mikey and his little cabal of impotent worshippers of death mongers, lost.
