"The CRATS are starting a real war. Time to go for their throats and start moving all President Bush agenda."

And you would propose to advance this agenda, how? With the current bunch of nutless, spineless weenie-boys running the "majority" party? Yeah, right.

This is a bunch of crap. We let Nixon go down to this crowd and jumped every time they whistled "scandal" during the Reagan years. Then we saw how seriously they took clean government when they were in power during the nineties.

Politics ain't about electing popes and preachers. The Democrats love to hold me to standards on my job that their president was excused from. Delay could rob six trains a day and a couple of banks for all I care. "If he can do the job....."

Republican 'paid family $500,000'
DeLay faces other sleaze allegations
The Republican leader in the US House of Representatives reportedly paid his wife and daughter $500,000.

The payments appear in Federal Election Commission statements and separate records in Tom DeLay's home state of Texas, says the New York Times.

While other Congress members employ relatives, these payments - via political committees - are reported to be particularly generous.

Mr DeLay's aides said the women had played a valuable role.

The Times says payments to his wife, Christine, and his daughter, Dani DeLay Ferro, were described in the disclosure forms as "fund-raising fees," "campaign management" or "payroll," with no further information about how they earned the money.

'Big picture'

"Mrs DeLay provides big picture, long-term strategic guidance and helps with personnel decisions," Mr DeLay's Americans for a Republican Majority committee (Armpac) said in a statement.

"Ms Ferro is a skilled and experienced professional event planner who assists Armpac in arranging and organising individual events," it added.

Mrs Ferro has run a number of Mr DeLay's re-election campaigns for his House seat.

Democratic lawmakers and watchdog groups have also alleged that Mr DeLay violated House rules on travel.

Over how many years were these payments made (hint: you need to do a little more research before openly smearing someone!)

Did you read this?

A six-day trip to Moscow in 1997 by then-House Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) was underwritten by business interests lobbying in support of the Russian government, according to four people with firsthand knowledge of the trip arrangements

If this is true, the man is a traitor to the American taxpayer that pays his salary. Accepting a bribe from an American businessman is business as usual in Washington. Accepting a bribe from a Russian concern is treason, in my opinion.

Accepting money from Russian lobbyists, trying to derail the capture of Milosevic the Russian lobbyists want to protect....

It doesn't stink or anything. What's really interesting is this info has to be being fed by Republicans.

Gonna be interesting. DeLay supporters, get your crying towels ready.

DeLay's Lavish Island Getaway
Embattled Lobbyist Arranged DeLay Trip
Rep. Tom DeLay, his wife, daughter and several aides stayed for free at a beachfront resort in Saipan, in a trip arranged by lobbyist Jack Abramoff. (ABCNEWS.com)
By BRIAN ROSS

April 6, 2005 — A Washington lobbyist under federal investigation for his lobbying activities arranged a lavish overseas trip to the island of Saipan for House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, over the New Year's holiday in 1997.

DeLay, his wife and daughter, and several aides, stayed for free at a beachfront resort.

The DeLay trip to the South Pacific island, originally reported by a "20/20" investigation, was part of an effort by former aide Jack Abramoff to stop legislation aimed at cracking down on sweatshops and sex shops in the American territory, which is known as the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Abramoff, who was working for the law firm Preston Gates Ellis and Rouvelas Meeds LLP at the time, was paid $1.36 million by Saipan officials and wrote in a memo obtained by ABC News that such congressional trips were "one of the most effective ways to build permanent friends on the Hill."

Abramoff is now under federal investigation for his lobbying activities, including Saipan, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

Andrew Blum, a spokesman for Abramoff's attorney, said on behalf of Abramoff that they did not comment on pending grand jury investigations.

Also, Blum defended Abramoff's lobbying efforts in Saipan, including DeLay's trip. "Any money paid to Preston Gates from the CNMI was for work that Mr. Abramoff and his team did on behalf of the CNMI during the course of their six-year representation," he said. "Rep. DeLay was one of over 100 members of Congress and their staff to visit the CNMI during that time.

After touring one garment plant, DeLay praised Saipan at the New Year's Eve party attended by top factory owners.

"You represent everything that is good about what we are trying to do in America," DeLay said at the time to his audience, which included Saipan officials and factory owners.

Later, according to a recording made by a human rights investigator posing as a potential customer, one of the prominent factory owners said that DeLay had promised to stop the reform laws.

"Do you know what Tom told me?" Willie Tan said. "He said, 'Willie, if they elect me majority whip, I make the schedule of the Congress, and I'm not going to put it on the schedule.' So Tom told me, 'Forget it, Willie. No chance.' "

Government watchdog groups found DeLay's trips to be troubling.

"There appears to be a pattern here of foreign travel being improperly paid for and that needs to be investigated by the House ethics committee," said Fred Wertheimer, president of Democracy 21.

Blum said it was a worthwhile, common practice in Washington for lobbyists to accompany the congressmen on such trips.

"The tradition of lobbyists traveling with members of Congress to visit various jurisdictions so that they could learn about issues that impact the Congress and government policy is well known," he said. "Mr. Abramoff once again is being singled out by the media for actions that are commonplace in Washington, D.C., and are totally proper," he said.

A representative for DeLay said that under disclosure rules, because the Saipan government funded his trip, DeLay did not have to include it on his financial disclosure statements.

My, my we certainly changed directions quickly, didn't we? I could have sworn we were talking about Delay employing his wife and daughter, but when you are challenged on the facts, you quickly shift focus to the Russia trip. Is this you're standard operating procedure when debating? I know I see it a lot when I'm debating liberals.

As for the "traitor" Delay, if he took some sort of bribe and then voted against the best interest of the people who elected him to office, then, yes, I'd be concerned. Of course, similar to the wife/daughter story, you have no facts that this happened to back up your charges. Also, the fact that Delay has been easily re-elected several times since this trip occurred leads me to believe that his constituents are more than happy with his voting record.

As for you - take two CLUES and call me in the morning. Or at least try and stay on one topic. Should I expect your next post to be critical of Delay on the Shiavo case?

Well, just look at all the newbies showing up to jump on the "trash Delay" bandwagon. Is this...interesting.

I think some of these people need to "moveon" because that's probably where they came from.

Guess they just want someone SOMEWHERE to actually pay attention to them.

I agree.

Hey, I'll say it right now, if there is ever credible evidence that Delay either:

A: paid money from his campaign to a relative (or anyone for that matter) that was not commensurate with the work actually done, or

B: accepted money and/or gifts from a third party and then voted AGAINST the interests of his constituents and/or country

I'll be here shouting for his dismissal and/or arrest as loud as anyone. It's just that, right now, we have NO EVIDENCE, credible or otherwise, just a bunch of innuendo and circumstantial crap.

Oh, and I've been looking at some of your "work" on other threads.

Why does the phrase "Go away lefty dweeb" stick in my head?

From the thread article

Unlike some House conservatives who scorn such support as "corporate welfare," DeLay proved to be a "yes" vote for institutions bolstering Russia in this period. For example, DeLay voted for a bill that included the replenishment of billions of dollars in IMF funds used to bail out the Russian economy in 1998.

then voted against the best interest of the people who elected him to office, then, yes, I'd be concerned.

You should be concerned.

Still clueless, huh? (and still no comment about the original issue in our little "discussion" here - the salaries paid to Delay's wife and daughter - that's OK, I'll politely not embarrass you anymore on that issue)

YOur example just demonstates how bias is the driving force behind this whole "investigation'. First off, payments to the IMF, while not generally a favorite of conservatives" are NOT the same as "corporate welfare".

Secondly, while the IMF is not the greatest organization in the world, no one in their right mind was going to let the Russian economy go down the tubes just to be idealogically pure. The damn country was still only 6 or 7 years out of commie rule, and an economic disaster there in the mid-90's would have had a terrible impact not just there, but world-wide.

And finally, I'll reiterate my original point, though your mind can't seem to grasp it (I'll type slow) - if Delay's vote on this matter was so horrible, why did he keep getting re-elected by comfortable margins? Clearly his constituents didn't have a major problem with this issue.

And there was Jimmy Carter's trip to China, John Kerry's trip to Paris, Jane "Hanoi Jane" Fonda's trip to North Vietnam...ad nauseam.

I remember when they used to execute traitors.

More like slanting the truth...to the Left of center.

I wonder if the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and the Seattle Times would know the truth if it kicked 'em in the rear. I think not.
