I realize this is OT, in a way.

Does anyone have any familiarity/knowledge with Catahoula Leopard dogs? Are they 'safe' as a family dog?

I'm looking into dogs that can help with our horses, but yet still be a family member.

I have a cat who is normally a very pleasant, friendly creature. Friends of mine came over once with their toddler daughter. The little one began pulling my cat's tail. I had picked up the cat and was about to lock her in a bedroom upstairs, when the toddler pulled on the cat's tail once too often and was bitten. Fortunately, it wasn't a big bite...didn't require anything but the most basic at-home medical treatment from me, and the parents didn't sue me. I learned my lesson -- keep the cat away from any children visitors and the parents learned to supervise their toddler around animals.

I don't...but have you tried doing a Google search...or maybe the American Kennel Club site -- www.akc.org (sorry, I'm too low tech to do hyperlinks, so you have to cut and paste the address.)

Roy and Dale chose a German Shepherd.

Border Collie.. . Exactly what you want..
1. Small enough to be a decent house - family dog..
2. Excellent temperament.. ( Not "heel nippers", like the Corgi, Border Collies are "headers".. they stare down the lead animals..)
3. Bred to herd animals.. It's their nature.. They will herd anything.. sheep, ducks, cattle, horses, children..(and adults.)
4. They're too small to cause injury to valuable horses, and (generally) too fast to get caught by a flying hoof..
