Dallas Police: Teacher Starts Brawl in Class

DALLAS - A high school teacher faces an assault charge after police say she walked into a middle-school classroom, grabbed that teacher's hair, yanked her out of her chair, and dragged her across the room while punching her in the face and kicking her.
According to the police report, Paulette Baines grabbed Mary Oliver in front of the class full of gifted students Friday. Baines was angry because Oliver told her daughter to quit loitering by lockers and go to class, Dallas school district spokesman Donald Claxton said.
Oliver said Baines was yelling at her as she entered the classroom.
"I want you to know I didn't raise a finger. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't do anything to aggravate the situation," Oliver said. "I did everything possible to defuse the situation."
Baines was charged with assault with bodily injury, according to Dallas County Jail records. Baines, 45, was released early Saturday after posting $2,500 bail, a jail official said.
Baines, who was placed on paid administrative leave, did not immediately return a call seeking comment placed by The Associated Press on Monday.
Oliver, who teaches seventh-grade science at a Dallas school for gifted students, said she had bruises on her face, a concussion and two broken ribs.
The incident happened after Oliver talked to Baines' daughter and several other students about going to class. Students are not allowed to be at their lockers during class time, Claxton said.
Oliver said she did not single out Baines' daughter, an eighth-grader. The girl went to the school counselor, who called Baines to tell her what had happened, Claxton said.
The posts seem to be made, on the whole, by bright and literate middle-schoolers.

Oliver made very derogatory statements that set Baines off.
Derogatory statements are not sufficient grounds for assault.
I am not suggesting that Baines was right to assault Oliver in any way...but lets be realistic...why would Baines assault this woman in this manner simply because she told her daughter to go to class?

Why would Baine's daughter feel so upset to the point of seeking counseling if the teacher said nothing disrespectful to her?

I don't know either teacher, but that is irrelevant. An act of assault was committed, and the person who perpetrated the assault -- Baines -- should be arrested, prosecuted, and, if convicted, locked away in the place where they keep nutjobs who can't control their tempers.
Bottom line: no matter what was said to who by whom, mere words are never grounds for violence. Ms. Baines is lucky the woman she attacked wasn't packing heat.
So we are supposed to believe that this woman, a teacher, who decides to assault another teacher, in the presence of students, has credible charges that would "explain" her behavior?
Sorry, but this isn't FantasyLand - the second she decided to lift a hand to another person she lost all credibility, should be fired and should be spending more than a few years in prison for assault.
Wow, you're really calling on my recollection ability. I didn't call the child a brat (just trying to catch up on a thread that is well over a year old). I believe there was something about one teacher physically attacking another who was put on paid administrative leave. Interesting post though. Go to bed.
