As much as i like thune for ejecting Daschle isnt he a tad bit inexperienced for the VP role let alone president. I know hes a solid conservative but doesn't he tend to waffle on issues sometimes? If i remember correctly in the 2002 race against Tim Johnson he didnt back soc security reform that most other republicans were running with. The other suggestion in the article is pawlenty but wasnt he the governor who defied the FDA and imported drugs from canada?

Kind of strange to be picking the Veep before we pick the Prez.

The Republican field of candidates has no depth.

I so much look forward to being proved wrong.

I hope so, i'll cry if Frist Mccain or Rudy is our nominee. Of course a big fear i have is that if we have genuine conservatives running like Allen or Sanford they could split the field and let a rino like mccain/rudy slip into the nomination.

Maybe VPOTUS; not ever POTUS. No way, no how.

Wrong. Tom Daschle brought himself down. Thune just jumped at the opportunity when it presented itself.

He'll be about as experienced for the job as John Edwards was last year.

More so, because he previously served in the House.

True but it doesn't help him that much.

I like Sen. John Thune but lets give him a chance to solidify his record.

His house record is pretty moderate, and he hasn't been a hard supporter of conservative policies overall, however, I do think (unlike most house to senate guys) that he will get more conservative, and could be an ideal spokesperson for conservative issues.

Thune just jumped at the opportunity when it presented itself.

Jumped in that "pushed him down the stairs" kind of way.

John Thune originally wasn't going to run, I'll give credit where its due, Senator Allen, Senator Frist and the President convinced him that this was the one he would win.

By 2008, he would have as much experience in elected office as Cheney did. Obviously, he wouldn't have had the 4 years as Secretary of Defense or Chief of Staff at the WH, like Cheney did, but Thune had years of experience on Senate staff before that, as well as the small business administration under Reagan, and the Railroad Director in SD. I certainly wouldn't call him inexperienced, he's got one heck of a lot more experience then Edwards, that's for sure.

That said, he's young, and he'll have other chances. I'd rather him stay in his Senate seat for a term or two first. Especially with the unfortunate development that is Stephany Herseth, his seat would be hard to hold without him.

That is SO wrong. It took a very special campaign to beat him, a very deep well-planned campaign.

I lost respect fot Thune when he failed to fight what was an obviously stolen election back in 2002. The evidence was clear, overwhelming, and most importantly, true. But Thune let Johnson take what should have been his office. Maybe he thought he could take Daschle in 2004 instead, thereby serving a greater purpose. But I fear he is one of those nice guy, whales on the pants Republicant's who would rather apologize every time a Democrat is caught doing something wrong.

Speaking of which, and I know I was exausted and a little punch-drunk from all the campaigning, but was I the only one who just about died laughing the day after the election in '04 when Cheney said 'Once again, I have delivered the state of Wyoming for the Bush/Cheney ticket!'

I just about coughed up a lung laughing.

A lot more so then Edwards for several reasons:

1. He'll have 10 years in experience in elected office, compared to Edward's 6, that's a 40% difference and Thune served in several non-elected positions, including an aid to Jim Abdnor and the SD Director of Railroads. Edwards hadn't even been active in politics on even the lowest levels till he decided to run for Senate.

2. He won't have spent his entire political carreer campaigning for higher office. As VP, he doesn't really even have to do anything till July or August of '08.

That said, I don't think he will be, or perhaps even should be the VP in '08, but it's just stupid to compare him to Edwards.
