"saying this as a Protestant, there is a better time and a better place for questions like that."

Agreed. I think that in a time like this we are all Catholic. God Bless the Pope. Prayers from a Baptist.

Yes, it is fascinating and very moving, and a fitting tribute to such a wonderful man.

We're honoring Mary and asking for her to plead for us before her Son.

The seminal scriptural basis of Mary's intercession comes from the miracle at Cana, when she interceded for the wedding guests and convinced Jesus to re-order His will at her behest, by revealing Himself and His ministry upon the changing of water to wine. His "hour" had not yet come, yet He honored his mother and literally changed His will because she asked Him - on behalf of all the wedding guests.

One day we will all be guests at the wedding of our souls with Christ. Mary intercedes for us without our even asking... like the wedding guests at Cana.

Thanks! I hadn't heard about the Cana story before. That sheds some light on it.

I was hearing the same thing before it even got to Reuters through Italian media sources 90 mins before it even went out. Don't feel bad...I got taken on the "sources" word as well.

Ok I have a "CAtholic" question here. Do Catholics believe that once saved always saved? In other words can I be a Catholic and still sin and then go to heaven. This confuses me. Like Ted Kennedy. He's a Catholic but look at his position on abortion. I'm not wanting to start anything here. Just curious about the catholic faith.

Try reading these links. They may be helpful in explaining Mary and the Pope.

Sorry I can't explain it myself right now. No time. Hope this helps! :-)

Can someone explain to me, a Protestant, why Catholicspray to Mary?

As a fellow Protestant, I'll tell you: Catholics don't pray to Mary. Many Catholics do, however, ask Mary to pray (or intercede) for them.

We are redeemed because of Christ. But, that does not mean that our salvation and eternity in paradise is assured. If one commits mortal sin, one's relationship with God is damaged. If we show no contrition and make no steps toward reconciliation the very real possibility of damnation exists. I don't think John Paul II has to worry.
