Europeans See [Schiavo] Issue As Strictly Medical [CAN I JUST SAY WHO CARES?]

Europeans See Issue As Strictly Medical

PARIS, March 31 -- In European countries that have struggled through their own end-of-life debates in recent years, the case of Terri Schiavo has sparked widespread interest and befuddlement at how politics and faith intervened in what most Europeans view as a strictly medical decision.

In the Netherlands, where euthanasia has been legal since April 2002, the struggle over whether to remove Schiavo's feeding tube would not have happened because "here it's more accepted that the doctors make those decisions," said Rob Jonquiere, head of the pro-euthanasia group NVVE.

"It's terrible, this type of judicial fighting over a person who can't do anything about it," Jonquiere said in a telephone interview from his home in Amsterdam shortly after Schiavo's death. "In the Netherlands, the doctors are making these decisions. The feeding tube and the hydration are considered medical treatments, and if they are determined to be futile, they can be stopped."

They are not futile if they keep a person alive, Beyond that, the decision is out of the hands of the physician. A Patient ought to have the right to change physicians.

Ya, let's give these doctors more of a God complex.(Except for those few exceptions). Anyway they are not always right, they are human too. And they still don't understand the inter most workings of the human brain well enough.

JUST IMAGINE HOW IT WOULD GO IF WE LET DOCTORS DECIDE....

It would go something like this...I'm feeling like golf today tell Mr Peterson's family his brain tumor is inoperable and we had to let him go, by the way who's on the schedule for tomorrow?

"The feeding tube and the hydration are considered medical treatments"

Now food and water become a medical treatment?

You know what, something you just said resonated with something I heard before. Let me explain.

I have a good friend who is a nurse. She tells me about multiple instance of doctors rushing deliveries (with contraction inducing drugs) so they can hurry up and go play golf for the weekend. If that isn't disturbing enough, think of all the motivations that might be at play with a doctor pulling the plug altogether. So many motivations that have nothing to do with an objective, compassionate evaluation of the facts.

I've had too many bad doctors to think this is a good idea.

Don't believe what you read in the liberal US papers. Read the European papers yourself---many of them are online. For example, today the German Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung carried a front page, full page story on Terri's death (you have to be able to read German), which in its concluding two paragraphs, under the heading, "[Catholic Cardinal] Lehmann: Schiavo's death not ethically permitted," notes the strongly stated moral and religious objections of the chiefs of the two principal Christian communities in Germany, Catholic Cardinal Karl Lehmann and Lutheran Bishop Wolfgang Huber, to the death of Terri----more outspoken in fact than some "Christian" theologians here in the US have been about the state-sponsored execution of Terri.

The Post's smug presentation of European opinion as devoid of moral or religious concern is simply the standard liberal media tissue of lies.

Good to know all of Europe hasn't gone to the dark side. Thanks for your enlightening post!

Michael Schiavo would have got 14 years in jail if he'd euthanised Terri in the UK. This article seems to treat a group of Mengele's in the Netherlands as "all of Europe". Typical lefty trick.
