Wedding-Day Blues: What happened to royalty? (Droll commentary on the Charles/Camilla affair)
National Review ^ | March 31, 2005 | Myrna Blyth

It was a fairy tale when we still wanted to believe in fairy tales. The bored and lonely prince after so many years had finally found a young, beautiful, virginal princess. And on their wedding day, his mother was so happy her difficult son had finally found the perfect bride that she danced a jig. And they lived happily ever after. For about a week and a half.

Of course, we didn't know at the time that the prince in question was a total sulk who had been getting it on with one of the ugly stepsisters for years. (I guess we just thought he was being stiff-upper-lip British when he couldn't even pretend to the BBC that he felt any real affection for his pretty bride-to-be.) What's more, to the amazement of everyone, including his father — who, it was rumored had done a bit of dallying himself — this dolt actually preferred the ugly stepsister — adored her, seemingly oblivious to her overbite, her pack-and-a-half-a-day habit, and her husband and kids.

Meanwhile, we were to discover by way of 100,000 headlines, 10,000 magazine cover stories, a couple dozen books, and one carefully calculated, sympathetically produced prime-time interview that the young and photogenic princess not only had the looks and P.R. smarts of a superstar but the accompanying eating disorders and neuroses as well.

Now all these years later, Charles the Unfaithful and Camilla the Ever-Ready, a week away from their wedding, are reaping the nuclear fall-out of their decidedly un-fairy-tale relationship. …

I like the term Mort Kondrake once used on the McLaughlin Group: Eurotrash.

I almost regret recently renewing my subscription to NR. Just finished the latest issue, and this People magazine tripe.
But is there a Serena Williams booty-call, with photos? No.
Just damnaram . . .

The only time Chuckie didn't have anything to do with Camilla was when she was PG..You know you can dress a pig in satin and it is still a pig. You can put a crown on the head of a whiny jerk and he is still a whiny jerk. These two fools deserve each other. The pity is that Diana paid a high price...her life was miserable. We can only hope that what went around for Diana comes around for Chuckie and his horse faced chain smoking soon to be HRH The Ugliness of Cornwall...

It does highlight the problems in today's world with having a hereditary monarchy. It's meaningless in terms of governance, and all it serves to do is create another class of celebs, only this lot doesn't pursue celebrity through their career choices but are born into it. I feel sorry for the members of the royal family, because despite all the money and comfort, they never get to just be. Charles made lots of bad choices in life and cheated on his wife, so he brought those troubles on himself. But I feel sorry for anyone born into that kind of situation with no hope of ever escaping it and no chance of ever just getting to live life and enjoy the simple things the rest of us do.

How does it harm you?

After all, you can just not read it.

Who is this Charles?

Anyway, Charles isn't going to be king. And Camilla isn't going to be Queen. Because Elizabeth II has no plans to depart this life.

And she's not on a feeding tube.

Lol, I choked when I saw that pic!! Anyway, it's kinda funny how everyone picks on Camilla and her looks! Maybe she's a very sweet and caring person! Diana never struck me as the brightest bulb! Maybe it's more of an intellectual attraction, which can last way beyond when the looks begin to fade.

Someone wrote that usually the husband leaves the old hag for the trophy wife, Charles left the trophy wife for the old hag. Go figure.

I agree with you about Camilla. It says something about Chuck that he, a most eligible bachelor who could have any woman in the world, would still carry a torch for her. I have always felt that she was his one true love, and he was forced out of royal duty to make a more appropriate choice to continue the royal line. While everyone canonizes Diana, no one ever cares that Charles was not allowed to make his own life choice.

Charles was not allowed to make his own life choice.

NO ONE can be forced to marry. He had choices; he could have given up the throne. He could have chosen someone besides Diana. He could have remained a bachelor. He could have married his "true-love" no matter what anyone thought or said. We all have choices. They may not always be great ones, but they do exist.

That's easy to say. You were never a prince. Everyone always talks about how badly Charles treated Diana. Does anyone ever recollect how she treated him?

If you marry a prince, you should expect to behave like a princess. She ignored royal protocol. She made no attempt to fit into the royal lifestyle. She constantly upstaged him and made him look silly when they went out together on official engagements. Even if you don't buy into that, think of this. Does a mother who really loves her son try to destroy his inheritance - basically out of spite. Diana sold magazines. She was a cash cow. As long as stuff about her sold, the press showed her in a favorable light. They are still trying to do it now that she's dead.

You assume I've never been a prince. I didn't say anything about how Charles treated Diana. I don't care how she treated him. My entire point is that we all make choices. Even princes.

Who really cares about Chuck and Horse Face! They deserve each other.

For those who live in America, it would be the tempermental monarchists (believe it or not, quite a few are here on FR). They would actually agree with Jimmy Carter and Tories in Canada that 1776 was after all a bad mistake. They would make good Tory Canadians if they follow their conviction and move north of the border.

For those who live north of the border, English-speaking brothers across the pond, or those living down under, well, we have to put up with this simply because the Prince of Wales is our future head of state.

But royal experts last week declared that, like it or not, she was going to have to be queen if Charles ascends to the thrown.

Simple solution to that problem. Charles will never become King. Diana's son will, although he's apparently got enough sense not to want to.
