Don't Abandon Tibet: Why Europe must not lift the arms embargo on China.
Wall Street Journal ^ | March 31, 2005 | Richard Gere

I was in Europe this month to receive an award from the Geuzen Resistance 1940-1945 Foundation on behalf of the International Campaign for Tibet. The Geuzen Medal honors the memory of Dutch resistance heroes who fought the Nazis by recognizing those today who resist repression, discrimination and racism, and the Campaign was recognized for promoting human rights and self-determination in Tibet through nonviolent means. It was a very proud moment for those of us who care deeply about Tibet and the brave Tibetan people--and certainly for me as the Campaign's chairman.

The cause of Tibet is now at a critical juncture. After decades of diplomatic stalemate, talks began again in 2002 between Beijing and the Dalai Lama's envoy, Lodi Gyari. As the Dalai Lama has repeatedly stated for decades now, the issue is not Tibetan independence from China but rather genuine Tibetan autonomy

edit...

Maintaining the embargo provides strong leverage in encouraging progress toward a resolution of the status of Tibet and toward sustaining stability elsewhere. The key to Tibet's self-determination lies in China's transformation. In supporting Tibet, we need to consider the changes that are happening in China today--its increasing sophistication and influence on the world stage and the desire of the Chinese people for progress. European governments, in concert with the U.S., are in a position to encourage China to begin substantive discussions with the Dalai Lama on Tibet. European leadership in this matter can perform a vital role in preserving Tibetan identity and culture. Today the citizens of Europe, who rightly honor their forebears for resisting injustice, can serve their legacy by helping the Dalai Lama resist a future Tibet determined solely by Beijing's interests. Let there be no mistake, the very survival of Tibetan culture and the Tibetan people themselves is at stake here.

I will just sit and enjoty the spectacle of one mob of leftists biting another. They differ on China when one third decry the betrayal of current PRC on Maoist ideas, one third adhor the crushing-minority-opponents the PRC is doing, one third want to support the PRC high and low just because it looks the most plausible enemy of Uncle Sam cicra 2005.

I am intigued by the Free Tibet movement. It is typical liberal feel good activism! After not seeing the bumper sticker for many years, I actually saw one last week. After all this time, Tibet is not free. There is no plan, only rhetoric. If George Bush said, "Free Tibet," it would happen inside of a year. The liberals worry about Tibet but 300,000 victims in Iraq mean (meant) nothing to them. The loony left talks and talks but does absolutely nothing!

It is going to drive the Western Left mad. (I'm ethnically Chinese BTW) On the one hand you have the biggest hopeful fighting Uncle Sam on your behalf, but on the other hand, their domestic message of economic developments, the famous words of Deng Xiaoping like "To be rich is to be glorious", and intense nationalist unity would have driven them off.

They would be even more embarrassed if the "Occidentalists" in universities start the logical extension that Chinese have a legitimate grievance against the West over their imperialist motive in supporting Tibetan independence (regardless to say, it is the right view and that Tibetans including Dalai Lama only want autonomy and not independence). In this case hell would break loose and I await the day when Noam Chomsky come out and say he supports Chinese national unity and Tibet in China.

Richard Gere wants Europe to maintain the weapons embargo? Well. How seriously will Jacques take his opinion? It's not like he's Jerry Lewis.

You said: "China: Execution of Tibetan Women and Girls -last month!!!!!! (photos, warning: gruesome)"

These pictures show the execution of Han ladies guilty of murder. NOT Tibetans and NOT girls. Plese make shure you have correct information before you post it!
China execute people who have done a serious crime, like murder. They do no longer execute political dissidents and most sertanly not children! The U.S. on the other hand DOES. Why do people like you have to emphasise that China execute people when so many countrys do the same and much worse I should add: Executions for political reasons and of children.
Do not judge others of things you are guilty of yourselfe!
