Maybe true - but I got the impression that they were up against a tight knit bunch of 'death' groupies - all tied to Hospice and the judge was the ruler who ran the show.

In the end - they succeeded with the way they set it up. The lawyers got her rehab money - Michael got his also - plus the bonus of having his wish to kill her carried out.

This horror story unfolded with the world watching and nobody had the guts to save her.

I think that is the larger truth behind it... and that's one reason I chose the title I used. We are literally up against a stealthy cult of death-worshippers.
