Is the ANA to nurses what the ALA is to librarians -- A liberal mouthpiece that doesn't necessarily reflect the views of its members?
Who would have thunk it?
Believe me this attempt to speak for all nurses is a farce.
More B.S.
Don't be surprised....
The national nursing organizations are notoriously left-leaning, just like the AMA.
The AMA's membership is low (as a percentage of Doctors)...I do not know the exact percentage, but I do know that no physician in my 20 member group belongs.
They may claim to represent 2.7 million nurses, but I'd be surprised if they had more than 2000 members nationwide. They are a joke. The only nurses I know who ever bothered to join their pathetic little group were on faculty somewhere.
Lotta meaningless words for "we are just following orders".
Mealy mouthed garbage like this is exactly why I pulled my membership to the ANA years ago. Patient advocate my foot, they are a liberal advocate.
I know some nurses and their view on Terri Schindler is consistent with this statement by the ANA. Be very afraid if you need medical care.
Oh, and excuse me, Nurse. When I want to know your politics, I'll ask you. Will you refuse to treat me, or give less than adequate care to a Republican?? Sheesh!
Yes, Terri, who her husband and his attorney say is so "peaceful", so peaceful that she needs a morphine drip to ease her suffering. The suffering they said she wouldn't experience. Murderers.
"End of life issues". The new name of the hemlock society. Why do I smell a rat? Is there any group in society today untainted by the political left?
Well my sister is an RN and she absolutely disagrees with this statement as it pertains to Terri. So do her all her nurse friends. I'm not sure who actually votes on these sorts of statements but they do not represent all nurses.
Food and water do not constitute "medical treatment." If they do, I'm going to start writing off every cent I spend on groceries and restaurants.
Your wisdom will be appreciated!
No surprise from this bunch. The ANA is also very, very concerned about the possible mistreatment of detainees at Gitmo:
"ANA Supports Further Investigation Into Prisoner Abuse
ANA has sent a letter to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld supporting further investigation into possible actions of health care professionals in the abuse of detainees at U.S. detention and interrogation facilities. ANA is not aware of any specific situations that have involved registered nurses (RNs); however, it is concerned about the possible role that RNs or other health care professionals may have played in this abuse. The ANA's Code of Ethics for Nurses and other ANA policies condemn violations concerning issues of health and human rights and guide the role of U.S. registered nurses in providing services."
Text of their letter available from link on this page:

Memo to ANA: At the time Terri came under "such circumstances", pulling nutrition and hydration was not considered being "artificially maintained".
Would Terri have expressed her wish to do something in 1990 that was yet unheard of?
Signed,
Nurse Vel
I have never been a member thank god.
