NRA Leader Advocates Guns for Teachers

All options should be considered to prevent rampages like the Minnesota school shooting that took 10 lives -- including making guns available to teachers, a top National Rifle Association leader said Friday.

"I'm not saying that that means every teacher should have a gun or not, but what I am saying is we need to look at all the options at what will truly protect the students," the NRA's first vice president, Sandra S. Froman, told The Associated Press.

Gun-control restrictions would not have prevented Jeff Weise, 16, from killing nine people and himself Monday at Red Lake High School near Bemidji, Minn., said Froman, an attorney expected next month to be elected president of the NRA, which claims 4 million members.

The presence of an unarmed guard at the school failed to stop the siege, she noted.

"No gun law, no policy that you could implement now or that was already implemented, I think, could possibly prevent someone so intent on destruction," she said. "I think everything's on the table as far as looking at what we need to do to make our schools safe for our students."

Froman said if it is the responsibility of teachers to protect students in a school, "then we as a society, we as a community have to provide a way for the teachers to do that."

When we start getting beslans here and more massacres and they start calling for gun bans for all, then you'll see what I'm saying.

Of course there could be deterence, but naw.. Lets leave them as the easiest possible targets.

you were the one who invoked the 2nd amendment. now show me in the 2nd amendment where it makes exceptions..

i never said anything about FORCING teachers to arm themselves. given the option, all it would take are one or two on each floor who choose to. i would trust the football coach protecting my kid with his concealed carry much more then i trust the freudians trying to figure out who will go nuts next.... maybe mental checks for all the kiddies? lock up the ones who are suspicious...?

face it.... the reason no one can be armed (except the LE) on Publik Skool grounds is because we have to progam the little brains that guns are bad. bad guns. very bad.

part of the reason i homeschooled my kids.

Not a good idea.

Students are already beating up teachers in school. The last thing we need is them beating up teachers and stealing their guns.

Did I mention that every principal should have access to an AC-130 Specter gunship?

Seriously, I don't see schools as a high priority target here...we have larger worries.

Larger worries? Like what?

Only thing larger I can see are nuclear/bio/chem attacks on our cities.

Not everyone should have access to guns

The Founding Fathers disagree with you. I'll stick with them.

This is a 'common-sense' type law that's needed. Allowing teachers or at least some armed guards at schools.

Bull, some of these teachers are emotional idiots.

How long till a teacher shoots a student for disagreeing with a political view point.

It's ridiculous. Most schools wouldn't allow it to begin with and parents would go ballistic.

Better to hire off duty cops and even, as someone else here mentioned, deputize the principle.

Last thing we need is a teacher mistaking the intent of a student and popping a cap into his gut.

Ok, but those are almost impossible to deter without a MAD setup with the islamic world.

This one's easy to deter. Have some armed people in schools. Will put an end to these rampage style deals, and possibly deter bigger raids too.

Ah, here we go: classic troll "debate" tactic #1 - putting words in the mouth of another and then demanding they "respond" to something they never stated in the first place.

Peddle it elsewhere, skippy. You're not fooling anybody.

If the teacher's that nuts, they may sneak a gun in and do it anyway right now. What's stopping them?

i don't have to explain a thing to you. maybe you should explain how you figure (post #14):

"NEA members" don't have a right to be armed or "Ward Churchill"

and then this little gem:

"Dont let your enthuisism for the 2nd amendment cloud your thinking. Not everyone should have access to guns"

and you've got the nerve of calling others socialists

Thanks for that. I live in NYC and we're still on orange alert, which is something of a joke to the rest of the country, except when you see signs of it every day.

Worries about schools should be alleviated with procedures. Security at the front door, secured exits and emergency procedures of lock down, etc. Coupled with communication between local law enforcement and school administration.
