LAHORE: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1870-1948), the man who inspired great leaders like Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King, may have harboured racial sentiments against black people if an article on Sulekha.com is to be believed.
The article quotes a series of letters and petitions from Gandhi, linking the black people of Africa to savages and portraying them as little better than animals. Gandhi writes, “A general belief seems to prevail in the colony that the Indians are little better, if at all, than the savages or natives of Africa. Even the children are taught to believe in that manner, with the result that the Indian is being dragged down to the position of a raw Kaffir”.

Gahndi did his non-violence bit and got slaughtered along with all his followers.
Basically, the moral was "non-violent civil disobedience only works with a society that cares about such things."
Important lesson the liberal forget when confronted with cultures that worship death (e.g., muslims).

I don't find it that strange, unfortunately. Gandhi is one of those people whom even conservatives have been systematically trained by the media and the government-run education system to uphold as an example of goodness and purity. Nevermind that he did have his racist moments (and not just when he was a young man) and was a socialist. To his credit, however, he disassociated himself from the hard-core Nazi-supporter types like Bose and vocally opposed them.
This story may be true, but as it comes from a Pakistani newspaper, and I have heard all manner of nonsense from Pakistanis and Indians about each other, I think I will wait to hear it from a less obviously biased source.

Yes...I was shocked by the number of people who were almost hero-worshipping Arthur Miller after he died. This even though Miller through his plays was a major force causing the anti-freedom and anti-church philosophies we suffer from today. Amazing. Same dynamic with Gandhi.
No surprise that Gandhi spoke out against the Nazis. All socialists hated the Nazis, Gandhi included.
I remember reading a quote in which he admitted as much and actually praised the British. Couldn't find it in a quick search.

Hmm,Ive read more gory stuff about Gandhi & the article you referred to has tonnes of debatable stuff,a good chunk of which has been disproven now.Here's my final take-Gandhi was not a superhuman,he made plenty of mistakes,but he still will be remembered for laying the seeds of a secular,democratic India.None of you may have ever known about this,but a good read of Indian history from a neutral angle will tell you that the Brits,the Muslim fundamentalists,The Hindu fundamentalists,the Communists,revolutionaries all hated Gandhi for one reason or the other.The Left "adopted" Gandhi in a big way only recently.
I am not sure what you mean. Are you saying we should not criticize Mao as a mass-murderer even though there maybe a billion Chinese people worshipping him everyday?
Gandhi favored the partition between India and Pakistan. One of the few things he got right and paid dearly for it.

Gandhi stood for a united India till the last moment & agreed to partition only when he knew it was unavoidable thanks to Jinnah's willingness to go to any extent to get Pakiland.About getting things right,well atleast India is still secular,united & democratic,but that's not something you are particularly fond of.
There would have been no partition without approval from Gandhi. Trust me, India is better off without having Pakistan as a state within it. India is by and large secular, but definitely not united. That is a massive propaganda from the govt.
Fine. But certain things are facts without having to reinvent the wheel, like Mao was evil. Right?
