WACO, Texas -- President Bush yesterday said he opposes a civilian project to monitor illegal aliens crossing the border, characterizing them as "vigilantes." He said he would pressure Congress to further loosen immigration law. More than 1,000 people -- including 30 pilots and their private planes -- have volunteered for the Minuteman Project, beginning next month along the Arizona-Mexico border. Civilians will monitor the movement of illegal aliens for the month of April and report them to the Border Patrol. Mr. Bush said after yesterday's continental summit, with Mexican President Vicente Fox and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin at Baylor University, that he finds such actions unacceptable. "I'm against vigilantes in the United States of America," Mr. Bush said at a joint press conference. "I'm for enforcing the law in a rational way." The Minuteman Project was born out of a long-held perception among many residents that more Border Patrol agents are needed to handle the flow of illegal immigrants. Mr. Bush was criticized by both Republicans and Democrats earlier this month for failing to add 2,000 agents to the Border Patrol, as set out in the intelligence overhaul legislation he signed in December. The president's 2006 budget allows enough money to add only 210 agents for the U.S. borders with Canada and Mexico. Mr. Bush said he will "continue to push for reasonable, common-sense immigration policy." He has proposed legislation to grant guest-worker status to millions of illegal aliens already in the United States. The legislation has attracted scant support in Congress, where it is widely regarded as another amnesty that will encourage even more illegal immigration.
The man can't do anything about the MM.Isn't it great.Pres. Bush has sold us out.Vote 3rd Party.
What he is doing now is weak<<
I have another word for it: Treason
You know d*mn well he never said that and has said on numerous occasions that amnesty is not the solution as all it does is cause more illegal immigration. Of course the Bush haters on this site could care less for the facts and would rather just attack and flame.
Ya when you add in the illegals coming in its pretty substantial the numbers. I've seen estimates of legal immigrants, plus illegal immigrants could be as high as 4 million coming in last year. But it could also be like 1.5 million.. no one really seems to know.
The conspiracist in me says that the ultra elite people in America view having millions of people in the country who have no legal rights as very useful.
The President does not have a line item veto.
It won't be closed now, until we have a mushroom cloud over an American city, or a bio weapon is released.
And maybe not even then.
I was wondering when the kneepads would show up.
What a shame. First time I disagree vehemently and I will oppose him.
This will be a problem for him and the Republican Party if they don't watch out.
I totally agree but do you think we will be able to FIND someone who will? and get them elected? Most people do not care about the illegal issues!
It was THEE missed opportunity of our life times.
If we get another opportunity it'll be at a HUGE expense.
Nice try, troll. Don't you have a "La Raza" meeting to attend this morning? Run along now, muchachito.
Do you have a feeling in your guts that you are writing "The Daily News"?
I could agree with you more on legal immigration if it wasn't for the illegal entries, it's too many people coming in at once.
One does have to surmise that King George (of England) uttered similar sentiments several hundred years ago, no?
I believe he will do just that. His possible action may show us the future intentions of the Feds against the citizenry.
Days after the September 11th attacks you personally charged Americans to be "vigilant" and that we should watch for and report suspicious activity to the proper authorities. That is precisely what the Minuteman Project is doing. Bad-mouthing them now is really bad form.
If you would fulfill the obligations of Article IV Section 4 of the United States Constitution and secure our borders from invasion there would be no need for the Minuteman Project and other such events and groups. Your malfeasance in office towards this massive problem has brought this situation upon us. You only have yourself to blame. Yet, there you are, gladhanding el Presidente Fox - yucking it up for the cameras. We who live on the border who must live with this intolerable situation every day of our lives feel betrayed by your words and your inaction.
You've had 5 years to secure the border - 3 years since the 9/11 attacks should have made you realize how essential our border security is. Yet the border situation has only grown worse. The Minuteman Project may end ugly. There is a high likelihood that someone is going to get hurt. The confrontation may escalate. There's a reason that we have laws and that the Constitution guarantees that the Federal Government will protect the states from invasion. You're seeing the reason unfold before your eyes. What you're seeing on the border and elsewhere is a natural effect of the non-enforcement of our laws and the lack of security on the border. Enforce the laws and secure the border or the problems will only get worse.
It is up to you. Why don't you come down here and see the border for yourself? Talk to me and my friends so that you can better understand what we have to deal with. Then you might start to take seriously your obligation to provide the border security necessary to protect the rights of Americans.
