I agree. It's a hoax most foul. A person or persons fabricated this fraud. The motives are manifold, but they either killed someone in a manner similar to Christ, or they sought out a dead body of similar description to the crucified Christ, mutilated it according to the descriptions in the Gospels, then wrapped it in linen and left it to stew in its own juices. Once the shroud was produced it would have discouraged others to attempt "copies", for to retain its "provenance", the church would be compelled to recognize only one fake and encourage or demand the destruction of any others.
I sure don't think much of it beyond a curiosity piece.
My faith sure don't rest on it.
