Freed former world chess champion Bobby Fischer on Thursday blasted US President George W Bush for his eight months in detention in Japan as he got ready for a new life in Iceland.
A visibly tired Fischer, sporting a long white beard and with a protruding belly, called Bush a "criminal" over the US efforts to extradite him for a 1992 match he played in Yugoslavia in defiance of sanctions.
"I was kidnapped," Fischer told reporters in brief remarks as he entered Narita Airport outside Tokyo to fly to Iceland via Copenhagen.
Asked how he felt about Japan's role in his ordeal, Fischer said he believed the country was "very, very corrupt".
"I'm not free until I get out of Japan," the 62-year-old chess genius said.
"I am going to relax in Iceland," he said.
Fischer, known for his outspoken anti-US and anti-Jewish views, was detained in July at Narita as he tried to fly to the Philippines, with Japanese authorities saying his US passport was invalid.
The United States wants to prosecute Fischer, who became a national hero for wresting the world title from the Soviet Boris Spassky in 1972, over a rematch in 1992 in Yugoslavia in defiance of sanctions over the Balkan wars.
Iceland on Monday made Fischer a citizen in tribute to his role in promoting the island through the 1972 chess battle, dubbed the "match of the century".
Yeah, so Fischer has to live on a crappy little island now. You know what I say to that?.....
CHECKMATE, B*tch!!!
A "national hero" ??? Most Americans don't even know who Fischer is and could care less about chess. Who wrote this ?
How will President Bush recover from this tragic loss??
(sarcasm off)
They probably mean that he was briefly a national hero for beating the Soviets at chess. But that was long ago and far away.
Icelanders must be very proud.
Either take that up with The Bent One or sod off.
I don't know, my impression is that Iceland is not a bad place to live. From what I have seen the women are pretty hot - that should count for something.
Now if he had beaten the Reds to death with his chess board, I could see this.
Definately not the case.
"as he got ready for a new life in Iceland."
Whew. Lucky for us he isn't coming here.
SHEESH!
After seeing those pics, I'd be really worried if that wierdo liked me, or anybody I cared about. (Kinda got the "Unabomber" look!)
Evil Genius or poisoned Leftist, we report you decide.
Bobby could have been a DNC contender...no worse than Howie Dean, JfK, Teddie, Kucunich, etal. LOL.
Iceland could be the place....for disillusioned anti-American Lefties after the '06 elections. Maybe Bobby will start a new career as the Master Travel Agent.
He should just come back and face his medicine. I can't imagine that anyone cares who he played chess with.
