State officials say they are considering removing Terri Schiavo from hospice, by force if necessary, despite numerous court orders upholding the removal of the artificial nutrition tube that has kept her alive for 15 years.
Lucy Hadl, secretary of the Department of Children and Families, said Wednesday morning that her staff is relying on a state law that gives the department the authority to intervene on behalf of a vulnerable adult who is 'suffering from abuse or neglect that presents a risk of death or serious physical injury.'
Hadl said that the DCF would have to file a petition in order to remove Schiavo, but that 'it doesn't mean we'd have to have judicial approval in advance of taking the action if we believed it met the threshold for doing it.'
Hadl said that seven years of court rulings backing Schiavo's husband Michael, in his contention that Terri Schiavo did not wish to be kept alive artificially would not stop the DCF from taking action.
'We're not compelled to look at prior judicial proceedings,' Hadl said.
What we are compelled to look at is the presenting circumstances and any allegiations of abuse and neglect that we have recieved. So we have to deal with those and fufill out statutory responsibility.'

"What'd you do at work today, hon?"
"Oh, not much. I arrested a kid who was trying to help a dying woman."
Awwwww how compassionate.
I think I'm going to be sick.
You are correct. Terri choose to end her life instead of living like a vegetable. You would do the same. Or is "living" to you following a mickey mouse balloon around?
Another poster who wants to punish the party that is trying to do something. This mentality is rampant.
One day you will ask, "Lord, when did I see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?" He will answer you, "Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me." And you will go off to eternal punishment.
Wrong. Both sides had their chance in court. The courts have said that it was Terri's wish NOT to live like a vegetable.
Amen, we argue niceties of the "law" while horrors occur around us. In biblical times, we would have been "Pharisees."
And that is the last word! Where is old Andrew Jackson when we need him for the right reason?
Clydye writes:
Take a look at her my friend.
That is not life.
She has been force feed for 15 years.
Over 20 judges have said that it was not Terri's wish to remain in that pathetic state.
No rational person would want too.
"Both sides had their chance in court. The courts have said that it was Terri's wish NOT to live like a vegetable."
1. A "chance" in a corrupt court is no chance.
2. She's not a vegetable, or "like a vegetable."
3. When told she was going to be killed, she tried to say, "I want to live," then burst into tears.
I can not fathom how it feels to stand by helplessly and watch your innocent daughter be starved to death because a judge has ordered it. I do not know this Country.....Again my son is in the Military risking his life so we can starve human beings simply because they are handicapped. Republicans better get their act together and those Democrats that believe in life better start doing some serious thinking. They got away with abortion but they will not get away with this....
I was listening to J. D. Hayworth on Imus this morning and he made a very succinct point. He noted that our legalities are outstripping our humanity. Imus, to his credit, agreed with him.
When we have men like Hayworth around, I am encouraged for the future. That there are a few brave souls, still in a significant minority but brave enough to stand up to the tide of death sweeping our nation, it gives the rest of us heart. The war for the nation's soul may still be won, but I fear the battle for Terri's life may be drawing to an unhappy close.
I take exception to that comment. I lived in Naples for 3 years and know many excellent Freepers who live in Naples who happen to be very pro-Terri.
Ask Sarah if her mom should have pulled her feeding tube. Ask Nora the RN that got fired from Hospice this week because she said that Terri was aware of her surroundings and that went against what Hospice is doing....
2/11/2005
Sarah Scantlin was 18 years old when, as a pedestrian, she was injured in a hit-and-run accident that left her in a vegetative condition, aware of her surroundings but unable to speak or move.
Since that time, she has been in a care centre in the Midwest US state of Kansas.
Scantlin´s parents unexpectedly received a phone call last week from the nursing home where their now 38-year-old daughter resides.
However, instead of the call being about Sarah, it was actually from Sarah.
"Hi mum," she said to her mother.
The words were a shock and a joy for Scantlin´s parents.
"There´s just no words," mother Betsy Scantlin told a CBS television news show. "I´ve just laughed ever since because it´s just so amazing."
Michael Savage just read from a document that claims that Jeb Bush has the unilateral authority to rescue Terri, but will he act? It's now or never, governor. The opportunity will not come again. Why so much hesitation?
The next time they do this, they will just hold the funeral and bury the next one alive. Remember they think they are not feeling this so what is the difference in their minds.
despite numerous court orders upholding the removal of the artificial nutrition tube that has kept her alive for 15 years.
Sorry, but it's a real nutrition tube. Any way they can find to create the image that Terri's being kept alive by anything other than food and water....
Bastards. Accomplices.
Hey man, Sarah Scantlin was in a vegetative state until she came out 2/11/2005. After that, it was stated she was mis-diagnosed, that she was really in a coma. You would just bury her alive and say oh well sorry 'bout that.
