CARBONDALE -- On the dance floor at Gatsby's II, a popular bar at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, a tall brunette drinks beer from a plastic pitcher while she grinds her backside into a man's body.
A silver disco ball hangs overhead while a blond woman in a pink, pleated miniskirt writhes on her partner's leg.
A girl notices that her boyfriend's attention is wandering. With a manicured hand, she grabs his face and plants a Hollywood-worthy kiss on his mouth.
On this sticky dance floor, littered with plastic cups and packed with gyrating bodies, women are the hunters as much as the hunted.
Traditional stereotypes dictate that men want sex, and women crave love. But, on today's college campuses, students say those gender lines are blurrier than a pair of beer goggles.
When a University of Illinois sorority girl observed over lunch at a Champaign cafe that "guys aren't looking for love," her friend chimed in: "I don't think we can blame it on the guys. I'm not looking for love, either."
Girls are just as bad as boys now," another woman said.
"To guys, [sex is] still like scoring," said author Tom Wolfe, who spent two years on college campuses researching his new novel. "The strange part is that it's become that for girls, too. They'll say, 'I scored Jack last night . . . finally!'''
A federal government survey of 4,600 college students found that slightly more male than female undergrads are virgins.

I expect my son to remain as pure as I expect my daughter to remain. And, just as importantly, I would forgive my daughter any indiscretions just as readily as I would my son.
Abortion is one exception that I can think of.
Maybe you weren't invited to the wild parties, 'cause they didn't want a pooper. ;o)
In reality, wild "sex" parties in college have been taking place at least since the 1960s, and likely before.
You have the usual secularist misunderstanding of what traditional thinkers mean by "natural". "Natural" in this context is not what animals do, but what humans are meant by human nature, as God designed it, to do.
I like your parents already.
The Romans were having orgies a long time before the 1960's. Doesn't mean it was a good idea.
I'll second your motion. I think she's right too.
Never said it was good or proper. Just a reality among a % of college age kids. Not all kids today participate in these things either.
But harping about it ain't gonna change anything. Much like drinking on campus.
There are plenty of things that can be done to discourage it, and to encourage and support kids who do smarter things. On many campuses, the administration is actively pushing promiscuity and making it tough for kids to avoid.
Very good, very succinct analysis of sex and marriage. My hat's off to you.
Well, they might have lasted longer if it hadn't been for that whole death thing. According the National Center for Health Statistics. The life expectancy for a white male in 1900 was 48.3 years. That kind of thing makes silver anniverseries rare.
What do you mean by "our," keemosabee? My relatives are human beings. I don't pattern my life on the behavior of primates, particularly regarding the institution of marriage, and I recommend that you don't either.
This is intuitively obvious and proven by common experience.
Uh, if it were so obvious to everybody we wouldn't be debating it, I don't think.
Unless we're lying to ourselves and others.
I think it varies with the individual. Some people prefer the safety and security of a long-term partner, others seek the excitement and variety of different partners, whether through serial monogamy or other arrangements.
I wonder what my wife would think about my seeking "the excitement and variety of different partners." What do you think?
One can be unhealthy with one's sexual behavior, of course, but there are many forms of healthy sexual practice which don't correspond to "one man/one woman till death do them part."
Really? What would they be? And how do you define "healthy" objectively?
Health is the proper operation of the body.
Of course, in all this you've ignored or avoided the central purpose of marriage, which is the begetting and raising of children. Since you've deluded yourself, or are lying to me regarding your true thoughts about children and marriage, please provide the empirical evidence that children raised in broken homes are better off than children raised by their parents.
I really like your thoughts about marriage. I also think people should marry at 18-25, it's healthier and easier that way. Cheaper, too (saving on infertility treatments, which may be necessary 10+ yrs later) :). I am saving all my money so that when my daughter turns 18, lack of money wouldn't stop her from marrying. I will do everything in my power to encourage her to marry early.
And what was the divorce rate in 1900?
just don't site low divorce rates from the past!!! it was often due to women unable to leave abusive husbands. Low divorce rate in older times did not mean anything good.
I'm not sure I follow what you mean there.
ROFLMAO
If only that were true. If it were, then all the people who are "beautiful on the inside" would be knock-out sexy, adn they aren't. The eye of the beholder thing is in full operation, but if the chemistry isn't there, it's not there. I dated a lot of women who were just duds in the chemistry department. Some of them were the greatest people, but it wasn't there.
