Tell the Truth! [about Terri Schiavo being starved to death]
FamilyNews ^ | 3/20/05 | Pete Winn

Posted on 03/20/2005 9:03:19 AM PST by XR7

A note to the news media: Stop lying about Terri Schiavo!
I have a message for the media: Stop, already! Just stop it!!

Stop saying that Terri Schiavo is "a brain-dead woman being kept alive solely on life support." She is not. She's a disabled Florida woman, who is now being murdered by medical personnel who have removed her feeding tube.

Aaarghh!!! Tell the truth! Stop saying this is about her right to die. Watch closely at the words coming out of this keyboard: T-E-L-L T-H-E T-R-U-T-H.

Terri Schiavo is not at all comatose. She is not at all on life support. She does not have a breathing tube or a respirator. She simply has been receiving her food and water — something everyone in existence needs to survive — through a tube.

What's more, though she is disabled, she probably could eat by herself — it's just too much trouble for hospital personnel to try to feed her by hand.

That's the key element here: Terri is inconvenient. She's especially inconvenient to her husband, Michael, for several reasons — not the least of which is that he's living with another woman and has children by her. Can anyone seriously trust he is operating in her best interest?

Tell the truth. The case of Terri Schiavo doesn't represent the right to die. It represents the right to live.

When murderers are sentenced to death, it comes as a result of a jury or judge passing sentence on a defendant who is sitting before them. One who has had the right to make a defense, to call witnesses and to testify for themselves, if they so choose.

But Terri Schiavo, this woman who has been incapacitated for more than a decade, has never had the right to do any of that. What's more, Judge George W. Greer, the Florida judge who seems bent on ending her life — who has more than once ordered her food and water removed — has never even seen Terri Schiavo in person.

Never seen her in person! It is inconceivable that a judge would pass judgment on a felon without ever having seen the defendant.

But then, that's the point, isn't it? If I am to believe the mainstream media — either this is about Terri's "right to die" or she, in some sense, deserves to die. After all, she's got no "quality of life," right?

Wrong. Terri is not a criminal defendant. She committed no crime. She is innocent. Her sole "crime" — and I say that with all the irony I can muster — is that she is disabled.

If anything, this case is about the rights of the disabled.

Make no mistake, "quality of life" and comfort are not the prime considerations for living, any more than parenting is about spending "quality time" with kids. Forget quality time. If you don't spend "quantity time" with children, that's when they appear to suffer, if we are to believe the research. And if a disabled person is going to be killed because he or she is "inconvenient," let's stop talking about his or her quality of life. The quality of life while being starved and dehydrated to death is nonexistent.

Let's talk about the death process for Terri if her feeding tube is not reinserted. After three or four days, she will have lost weight and will have begun to lose normal body secretions. Her mouth will begin to look dry and her eyes will appear sunken. She will look thinner because her body tissues will have lost fluid. Her heart rate will gradually go up, and her blood pressure will gradually go down.

Five to 10 days from now, her alertness will decrease markedly. Breathing will become irregular with periods of very fast and then very slow breathing.

From day 10 until death — first coma, then kidney function will decline and toxins will begin accumulating in her body. Those toxins will cause her respiratory muscles to fail. Then multiple organ systems will begin to fail from lack of nutrition.

Then, and only then, she will die.

Sure. You're right, mainstream media. That's exactly what Terri has a "right" to. That's exactly what she would have wanted.

Excuse me while I vomit.

OK, I didn't take care to look back and see your point. My bad. Some describe the DoI as the organic Constitution. I agree, it gives the reasons, justifications and authority for breaking from Britain and forming a new government as well as a breakdown of the attributes of a good government. Can the Constitution (or the existence of our country even) be seen in isolation of the DoI?

turns down a million dollar offer to walk away

The million dollars was a phony offer but of course the media does not report that fact. The truth of the matter is that even if a real offer were made, Michael Schiavo would have to turn it down. Schiavo has presented himself as a loving husband who wishes to fulfill his wife's bidding. Now,if he ever accepted money to walk away he would be admitting to the world that he is just a slime-ball.

We all have a psychological need to be respected. Even the worst of society's dirt bags was to look good. Al Capone was a murderer and racketeer but he was also a philanthropist who gave large sums of money to charity.

My apologies! I didn't understand that at all. Thanks for setting things straight.

Terri's not in such bad shape and certainly appears to have a powerful will to live. She's a nice gal, and if she never gets better, at least she'll be an innocent in the eyes of God -- which is more than I can say for her would-be killers.

Y'know, what's really troubling about her "position" is not her handicaps. It's what they do to her. It's cruel. She isn't permitted to leave her little cell, can't go out in the sunshine, can't keep the cards and flowers people send to her, can't get the treatment and attention she needs and was awarded money for. All those little niceties are THERAPY, not just kindness. She can't eat by mouth more because they won't let her than that she's too disabled (she CAN swallow, of course). They (the Felos law firm) are VERY careful not to let ANYTHING happen that could let her get better because that destroys their case for killing her.

A certain lawyer at the Felos firm had better enjoy this life because I doubt she'll enjoy the next.

Maybe I should have asked "should it be" instead of "can it be?" Doesn't the DoI set the principles that the Constitution was written to address? There wouldn't be a Constitution or a United States, as we know it, without the DoI.

Hard to "get better" without any therapy for over a decade.

Educate yourself.

true, as far as that goes.
however, you imply that the USC is an inevitable outgrowth of the DoI, and it is not.
The DoI, first and foremost, was justification for a war.
the USC is, first and foremost, the establishment of a federal republic on the ruins of a half-baked confederacy which was itself the first attempt to shape the peace after that war.
The constitutional convention was no placid circle of philosophers adducing from the DoI. The disagreements were often quite fundamental and heated enough to come to fisticuffs at least once IIRC.

Look, I know what you are trying to say, but I will not go there. We are a republic, ruled by law. The DoI has no legal weight. Thus, the glorious poetry of the DoI has no swaying legal authority, irrespective of its moral weight and probity.

Well, I have a question too.

Why is your sister your brother??

" I didn't have to train Briah. She was your brother the minute she was born. "

My brother has a daughter named Briah.
My sister is Darkchylde, my brother is DarkshadowNY.
(He's the oldest of the three of us, and he doesn't post unless he is bored.)

Sorry, we weren't very clear on that were we?
Only those familiar with 'we rotten kidzes' woul've known what we were babbling about!
*sorry*

OK, I'll agree that the DoI is not a statutory document and carries no legal authority in that respect. But I disagree that those "fundamental disagreements" were not part of a process of adducing the essence of the DoI into a framework of statutory law to be our Constitution and BoRs. The basic principles of the DoI are reflected throughout those two documents. The poetry of it may not be law itself but certainly its moral weight and probity still provide sound rhetorical guidance for understanding the genesis and purpose of the latter two.

you are still trying to make me admit to a constitutionally guaranteed right to life.

I shall not, since there isn't, so you might as well quit it.

I will say that there is an unenumerated natural right to life (cf: the ninth and tenth amendments) which is moderated by the fourteenth amendment's due process clause.

That does not help you in this case, as in this case the statutory processes legal and ruling in the state of Florida have been duly enacted and observed.

Sis has been hanging out on music band websites.
And over at Engrish and other such sites.
Dunno why she hasn't been in.
We talk, but she doesn't tell me everything.
