If I'm not mistaken, kids in High School electronics classes can make eavesdropping equipment that sends conversations into radio waves. Not as powerful as a nearby microphone [the standard bug you see on TV], but more sneaky. Tape the radio frequency, and you got it. No joke.

These poor parents are probably not so saavy. My own father couldn't set an alarm clock, although he can do some things exceptionally. It just depends on where you stand and where those who stand against you do.

You're not mistaken. That's a pretty accurate description. It could slammed together quickly using parts from Radio Shack. Just add a "certain kind" of microphone and you're set. BTW, it can be done outside the room.
There's also a way to beam a low power maser (not laser) at a window glass, and hear what's said in a room by reading the vibrations of the glass. The judge banned recording devices inside her room, if you catch my drift...
