they take things away from you when you are taken into custody. He could have bonged them on the head with the flag and because the flag was in his possesion, they usually take it and when he is released, he will get the flag back. This is such standard procedure.

No I don't. If they took him to jail, they probably didn't want him to have it there.
I just saw it as a symbol of what the spiritual battle is about.
