McGwire Tells Panel He Won't Name Names

WASHINGTON (AP) - Retired slugger Mark McGwire Thursday told a congressional panel investigating drugs in baseball that he would not "participate in naming names" of players who used steroids. McGwire did not say in his opening statement to the House Government Reform Committee whether he used steroids.

Two current players, Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmeiro, said they never used steroids. That duo and McGwire were accused of using performance-enhancing drugs by Jose Canseco in a best-selling book that helped prompt the hearing.

In a tense scene, Canseco sat at the same table as the other players as he told the lawmakers that he could not fully answer their questions because of concerns his testimony could be used against him.

Choking back tears, his voice cracking, McGwire said he knows that steroid use can be dangerous and will do whatever he can to discourage young athletes from using them.

"What I will not do, however, is participate in naming names and implicating my friends and teammates," said McGwire, who ranks sixth in major league history with 583 homers.

But the NFL has almost no abuse whatsoever, because they test once a year and almost no one tests positive.(sarcasm)

That's true, and I said what I did because MLB put an asterisk next to Roger Maris' name.

McGwire is telling the Senate, in other words, to go pound sand.

The big question.....why did the panel not subpoena Bonds??

Because they don't want to disrupt the BALCO investigation, and because Bonds is an antagonistic and unpredictable interview, who wouldn't be easily cowed by Congressional blowhards. Same with Sheffield. Both of those guys would eat the committee for lunch.

Is he in front of the Senate or the House?

Either way, good for him for callling the witch hunters' bluff.

Teddy also wanted to know from Schilling if a 'submariner' usually uses an Oldsmobile for his underwater trips.

McGwire pretty much admitted to taking steroid which isn't a surprise, but it is still sad.

Fair enough....my biggest problem with Bonds is that huge padding he gets to wear on his right arm. You can't push him off of the plate, it takes away the fear factor of hitting a major league pitcher.

"Why do you care?

Because we were sold a lie by the 'roid users and baseball. Because the Maris family followed a 'roid freak around the country to watch him break the record their father earned honestly. If you are a sports fan you'd understand.

McGwire has talked about using ANDRO, but it's clear he was a big guy from the day he came into the league.

Bonds was not called because there is a federal investigation into his steroid use with BALCO.

I'm convinced that all Congressional participants have Bush in their long term witch hunt goals. I'm just waiting for them to start building the bridge.

The difference here is you and I can walk into GNC right now and still get ANDRO.

We couldn't, however, get our hands on the steroids that Bonds, Sheffield, Marion Jones and all of the rest of the people under investigation in the BALCO obtained.

McGwire never tried to hide the fact he used ANDRO. The whole point of THG was that it was undetectable.

"That's true, and I said what I did because MLB put an asterisk next to Roger Maris' name"

And I agree. My question about this is why just baseball and why now? This has been around for a long time and the IOC is the only ruling body to seriously pursue it.

congresscritters are probably busy collecting authographs for their kids.

Probably the only reason Schilling was called to appear.
