McGwire Tells Panel He Won't Name Names

WASHINGTON (AP) - Retired slugger Mark McGwire Thursday told a congressional panel investigating drugs in baseball that he would not "participate in naming names" of players who used steroids. McGwire did not say in his opening statement to the House Government Reform Committee whether he used steroids.

Two current players, Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmeiro, said they never used steroids. That duo and McGwire were accused of using performance-enhancing drugs by Jose Canseco in a best-selling book that helped prompt the hearing.

In a tense scene, Canseco sat at the same table as the other players as he told the lawmakers that he could not fully answer their questions because of concerns his testimony could be used against him.

Choking back tears, his voice cracking, McGwire said he knows that steroid use can be dangerous and will do whatever he can to discourage young athletes from using them.

"What I will not do, however, is participate in naming names and implicating my friends and teammates," said McGwire, who ranks sixth in major league history with 583 homers.

Andro was not a banned substance....why wouldn't he have it in his locker. When he was using it, it was perfectly legal to do so in MLB.

McGwire Used the Andro as a Plausible excuse to DEFLECT FROM THE STEROID RUMORS.....

Excellent point, so he was a liar long before yesterday.

Where is it written (except in Jose Canseco's book) that McGwire ever took steroids? How could he lie about something he did not do? I guess that the andro story would deflect from rumors, but since when did RUMORS become FACTS?

Mcguire was probably on something more like 750mg enanthate/week for 10 weeks + 30mg dbol/ day for the first 4 weeks.

I can't believe how ignorant people are about steroid use. When I played H.S football and baseball in the early 80's 1 in 10 kids used. When I played ball in a Div 3 school it went up to 1 in 4. I can only imagine what it was like at Div. 1 schools. When I was in H.S they passed it out like it was candy. In fact, a local cop used to keep the "gear" in his gym bag. I'm going to go with the odds on this one and guess that the pros have access.

Why my quiet suburban town needed Captain Andro on the force is another issue. Maybe the mayor was worried that some super villian would pull a bank heist.

Next you will have congress investigate if steroids are used in the Mr. Olympia competition.

I guess I am just being ignorant. People would never use steroids even if it made the difference between them making $1 million a year and $30,000 a year.

Whenever I hear the word steroids my eyes light up! I just think its crazy democrats are more passionate about debating steriod use than saving Schiavos life in Florida. Shockingly, several dems (Wexler) and several liberal newspaper editorials (Washington Post) have criticized the government stepping in and issuing the subpoena's trying to save this woman's life. Only when a life can be saved are the democrats concerned with "excessive use of government power" or allowing "legal issues traditionally left to the states to creep into the federal level"

Since when do DEMs care about states rights!!?

"I could tell from your first message that you had a disdain for Canseco. It seemed that you could not believe him because of that."

I don`t have a disdain for him, I simply cannot take his words at face value with what has already been proven about his book. The guy included info in that book that is simply false ; It has been proven.

"As i said, i don't have all the facts in this case. I'm sure you don't either. But what has he said that has been proven untrue?"

Canseco has made allegations about these players. No facts were presented. So how can I make some kind of judgement about anyone without any facts. You are innocent until proven guilty. Just because someone makes an allegation against you does not in any way force you to answer that allegation. If Canseco wants to prove he is telling the truth in this case, make him prove it. Not those he is accusing.

Not to keep arguing but you odnt know what you are talking about.

Go back, and research the state of the science of Andro in 1998.

AllHype, no delivery. Andro did not become effective till 4Androstene17diol was discovered, and that was not what McGuire was using.

Going onestep further andro could NEVER deliver the same benefits, as those McGwire reaped.

so....it would be impossible for McGwire to have put on any amount of weight working out all off-season?

The rumors that he took steroids are just that....rumors. Until someone can PROVE any of this, it is all just speculation. Unlike Bonds, who admitted to using steroids, just not knowing that they were steroids (according to leaked Grand Jury Testimony).

So, the science of ANDRO does not matter. He was a big guy coming into the league, hitting 49 HR his rookie season. It is not unfathomable to believe that he could gain weight or muscle by working out alone. Maybe the "ANDRO" acted as a placebo for him. As I stated previously, until someone can prove McGwire took steroids, IMHO he did not. And if the only "proof" is written in Canseco's book....that thing is so full of mistruths, it reads like John Kerry's war record.

If the physical evidence doesn't prove it for you, at least we can be sure of one other thing....

you Bonds/McGwire KoolAid types will never put down the cups....

If he didnt take 'roids, where was his denial, when he was under oath last week ????

Even the sportswriters that were doling out the kool-aid have come around.....but hey.
I'ts still a free country, facts dont have to mean anything, if you choose to see it that way.

facts dont have to mean anything

What facts? The only facts I have to go by are the numbers. McGwire hit homeruns with consistency his entire career.

where was his denial

Since when is a lack of denial an admission of guilt?

If the physical evidence doesn't prove it for you

in 1987, McGwire was listed at 6'5" tall 220 lbs. At the end of his career, he was listed at 6'5" tall 250 lbs. So he gained 30 lbs over 16 seasons, and this constitutes your physical evidence?
