McGwire Tells Panel He Won't Name Names

WASHINGTON (AP) - Retired slugger Mark McGwire Thursday told a congressional panel investigating drugs in baseball that he would not "participate in naming names" of players who used steroids. McGwire did not say in his opening statement to the House Government Reform Committee whether he used steroids.

Two current players, Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmeiro, said they never used steroids. That duo and McGwire were accused of using performance-enhancing drugs by Jose Canseco in a best-selling book that helped prompt the hearing.

In a tense scene, Canseco sat at the same table as the other players as he told the lawmakers that he could not fully answer their questions because of concerns his testimony could be used against him.

Choking back tears, his voice cracking, McGwire said he knows that steroid use can be dangerous and will do whatever he can to discourage young athletes from using them.

"What I will not do, however, is participate in naming names and implicating my friends and teammates," said McGwire, who ranks sixth in major league history with 583 homers.

YEah, I don't hate him, but he's very "emotional", i.e., turns on the waterworks at the drop of a hat.

I guess I just wanted to brag I saw him hit the record-breaker in Houston the second to last (?) day of the season. Larry Dierker got really pissed at the Astros, and it was the game that clinched his departure. After his tantrum he put in a rookie and told him to pitch to him. Sha-na-na-na etc., as they say.

When I heard Kucinich start talking about owners as the most responsible for steroid abuse, this was the first thing I thought of.

Big Mac's congressman from St. Louis asks the question we all want to hear: 'Did you use anything but Andro during 1998?'

He takes the fifth.

Good. They all should. Do an "I am Spartacus" moment on the grandstanders.

Congress didn't do jack until MLB had already acted. Waxman got busy when Canseco claimed that Bush had to have known about steroid use in baseball. Waxman wants to tar Bush with this, you watch.

Meanwhile, owners got staduims built, vendors and advertisers made tons of money, as did players who may not have been on steroids but reeped the benefits of increased revenues. Am I supposed to believe that the solution is to retroactively go after a few players who may have taken advantage of the situation at the time?

This is a sham.

He's trying to shut down the line of questions. I don't blame him. Whether he's innocent or guilty, there's nothing good that can come of him getting into which supplements he used. They are just trying to embarass him and in the process, bring down a man because they are Congressmen and they need to show how powerful they are. That Congressman who was talking is no friend of the Cardinals. He is from a district that was run by his father as a fiefdom, and he took it over, and the Cardinals are just that club who people from the suburbs like to come watch.

As for MLB taking on this issue, they haven`t proven they are serious about it yet. First offense : a 10 day suspension "or" $10,000 fine..... That is not being serious.

And no anonymity. It's serious. Let's see how many they catch this year.

McGuire's as phoney as his home run record.

"I'm not here to talk about the past." No? Well are you in Washington to predict the future?

(Current count on McGuire weaseling out on answering questions...so far, said 2 more times more than his home run record.)

Fine with me. The other sports seem to function fine without an exemption.

In other words, since he was invited to talk about how they can change things for the future, he's criticized for not talking about the past.

I'm proud of the way McGwire ahs dealt with these bums in Congress today.

First time offense equals 2 year suspension. 2nd offense lifetime ban.

I think this is a good standard...for all sports.
