WASHINGTON (AP) - Retired slugger Mark McGwire Thursday told a congressional panel investigating drugs in baseball that he would not "participate in naming names" of players who used steroids. McGwire did not say in his opening statement to the House Government Reform Committee whether he used steroids.
Two current players, Sammy Sosa and Rafael Palmeiro, said they never used steroids. That duo and McGwire were accused of using performance-enhancing drugs by Jose Canseco in a best-selling book that helped prompt the hearing.
In a tense scene, Canseco sat at the same table as the other players as he told the lawmakers that he could not fully answer their questions because of concerns his testimony could be used against him.
Choking back tears, his voice cracking, McGwire said he knows that steroid use can be dangerous and will do whatever he can to discourage young athletes from using them.
"What I will not do, however, is participate in naming names and implicating my friends and teammates," said McGwire, who ranks sixth in major league history with 583 homers.
Kurt is the only one I care about.. the others are frauds.
I agree. Waxman wants to disgrace Bush. You can tell by the cast of characters. Canseco --> to Sosa --> to Bush.

He pleaded the 5th amendment. If he didn’t use steroids, why not just say “I didn’t use steroids. Instead when asked if he used steroids, he pleaded the 5th and then said he wouldn’t implicate his friends “dealer”.
In fact, McGwire was so open about using andro that it was in his locker and a reporter noticed it and asked him about it during an interview.
And I'm really amused by the people asking for McGwire to just deny using steroids. Sammy just did and no one believes him. So McGwire's point was that he could deny it, but no one would believe him. I guess he was right.
McGwire is a loser and he knows he is a con... his whole career is a fraud.... and he wants to only talk about POSITIVE.......and not the past!

They don't have to. So far the government has not been involved and the light of day is being shone on the issue. This is getting exposed without the help of government. This should not be their issue. Government thinks they have to be involved in everything.
McGwire takes the fifth. Schilling says that the records should not count, stand up guy.

Why couldn't you get your hands on BALCO roids? Did you try? Were you denied? BALCO was in it for the money, if you wanted it they would sell to you. The marquee names probably got them free for their advertising value

Are you a sports fan? If so when you go the park/stadium and pay your money do you want to know that you are not being sold a fixed product? Well for me that's my "So What". If baseball takes the "so what" attitude the legacy of the game is lost and it becomes the WWF with bats.

Huh? They were doing this under the table and behind closed doors. They weren't looking for free advertising. THG is a designer drug, designed to avoid detection in normal steroid testing. Personally, I would have never been able to afford this type of drug (however, you are correct in assuming I did never try). But I doubt if little ol' me could just call up BALCO and ask them to hook me up with some undetecable steroids. They were afraid of getting caught, which they ultimately did.
Yes, Shilling is a stand up guy. The others are jokes.. and juiced or have been juiced. My sons looked up to these guys they were heros to them. They know steriods were used and my guess is 50% or more used them. When I think of the college kids who go to school who are not athletes, and just go to class pay their own tuition, look to these type fakes with ill in the pit of their tummies.
