REPORT: CHINA, RUSSIA TO 'REHEARSE INVASION OF TAIWAN'
The Drudge Report ^ | March 17, 2005 | Matt Drudge

MOSCOW, March 17. (RIA Novosti)-Yesterday, Chief of the Russian General Staff Yury Baluyevsky left for China to settle a scandal over the first Russian-Chinese military exercise, Commonwealth-2005, which is due to be held this fall off the Yellow Sea coast, writes Kommersant.

The initial plans were to practice operational teamwork in combating terrorism during the exercise. However, Beijing, skillfully changing the format of the exercise, has tried to re-orient the two countries' armies to practicing an invasion of Taiwan.

The choice of where the exercise will take place became a stumbling block. The Russian military selected the Xinjiang-Uigur autonomous region, basing their choice on the area's problematic nature due to Uigur separatists and its proximity to Central Asia, which has become an arena in the fight against international terrorism. However, Beijing flatly rejected the proposal. Instead, it suggested the Zhejiang province near Taiwan.

A joint exercise in this area would look too provocative and trigger a strong reaction not only from Taiwan but also America and Japan, which recently included the island in the zone of their common strategic interests.

Beijing is trying to use Russia as an additional lever of pressure on the disobedient island to show it that its policy is also causing dissatisfaction in Russia, from which the Taiwanese are expecting assistance in their dialogue with Beijing and bid to join the WTO and the UN.

On the Russian military's insistence, the exercise was shifted north to the Shangdong peninsula. However, the Chinese are trying to change the format of the exercise with proposals to enlarge the contingents with Marines and Pacific Fleet warships. Marine landings to seize the area will be practiced during the "antiterrorist" exercise.

Russia's agreement to hold the exercise will inevitably cause a furor in America, Japan and Taiwan. But a refusal will spoil relations with China, which three months ago courteously agreed to Russia's proposal to hold an exercise.

Oh, I get it! The Chinese want the Russians to help them practice amphibious assaults on islands strongly held by the Abu Sayyaf -- that must be it!

2 pilot, 3 crew (?), 1 B-52, 1 MOAB - which by definition are conventional weapons, can destroy thousands if not 100's of thousands of ground troops and armament before lunch. One squadron of fighters with torpedo's could almost wreck their navy single handed out in open water.

Never good to underestimate, but they would be fighting with cold war hardware.

.... I suspect Russia would get involved in a conflict between the U.S. and China. Russia misses it's power and will jump at the chance to bring us down if an opportunity arises.

Maybe, if they're stupid enough......their big problem is going to be Chinese irridentism w/ respect to the Russian Far East, and they can read a map as well as we can. Having friends in Alaska may be the difference between their keeping Siberia, or not.

What is a little hard to understand, though, is why Russia would want to get involved... other than perhaps ramping up demand for military exports to China.

Same general reasons Stalin and Hitler jointly split Poland in half. Drunken Russians try to tame and entertain their nearby beasts.

Oh boy...could we take on the bear and the dragon at the same time? Even with Tom Clancy's help?

The fact that neither country has a sustainable blue water Navy, and so long as it does not turn Nuclear, then yes, our chances of beating a chinese/russian alliance are damned good.

If it goes Nuclear and we don't surrender in the first 6 months, then we will beat them simply by the fact we will drive their economy into the tank. They won't be able to fund the war.

Our Economy thrives in wartime, thier's will not.

And its Americans who are arming and helping Russia's worst enemies (Saudis - Pakistan). Not so proud of our allies either.

I define journalisim as FACT CHECKING a story with SOURCES. What Drudge does is spread information he found - without checking if it is accurate.

Chinese are not Americans - they won't do to Siberia what we did to Mexico.

But we only need 11 CVA's. Even though Chinese contractors are holding the Panama Canal.

Kennedy should be retired, Navy leader says
By DALE EISMAN, The Virginian-Pilot
March 17, 2005

WASHINGTON — The aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy has only ''marginal capability'' and will soak up about $300 million a year the Navy should invest in new and better ships, Navy Secretary Gordon R. England said Wednesday.

“We do not need this carrier,” England asserted.

England and Adm. Vern Clark, the chief of naval operations, sharpened their rhetoric in defense of a decision to mothball the 37-year-old Kennedy and cut the Navy’s fleet of flattops to 11, the smallest force in decades.

“We are moving to a new Navy, and this is the pivotal year to do that,” England said.

Story link.

Sounds like what they said about battleships. Bold words -- we'll see if they meant it later, or if they were just playing "do as I say".

Remember: Republicans don't really like defense appropriations. Defense is expensive. Raises taxes. They hate paying taxes -- for anything. They made the Army train with wooden guns in the 1930's when Hitler was building 1000 aircraft.

History. Chinese model of empire is not to occupy lands of barbarians but to make them pay tribute and bow dwn to the power and glory of the Middle KIngdom. Any time China has left her borders it is under the rule of outsiders like Mongols and Manchus. As China falls away from Communisim as aguiding force she will accept traditional Chinese models.

China falling away from Commuinism?? You are joking right? China is 110% Commuinst. China & Russia formed an "offical alliance" in the the early Summer of 2001. The Commuinsts are alive & well. A good book to read about what's happening is titled: Unrestricted Warfare; China's master plan to destroy America by Col. Qiao Liang. Wang Xiangsui, People's Liberation Army. The book is translated from original Chinese documents. I purchased this book at Amazon.com

So your proof that China is 110% communist is an alliance with Russia?

What in China indicates she is more communist now than she was under Mao? Please provide economic evidence (with source) of increased communisim in China.

This should be good.

I asked that you provide economic examples of how China is now more communist than it was under Mao - your 110% means that under Mao China muct have been only 90-100%.

Wanting to destroy America has zero to do with being communist - that's power politics.

I await to see your evidence. We may even wake up Wal-Mart with your expose.
