Embattled Colorado Professor's Lawyer Expects Settlement Soon
Published: Mar 11, 2005 DENVER (AP) - An attorney for the University of Colorado professor who compared some Sept. 11 victims to a notorious Nazi said Friday he expects a settlement with the school "within the next day or so."
A member of the university's governing Board of Regents confirmed negotiations were under way between the school and Ward Churchill, a tenured professor of ethnic studies. Churchill drew outrage by writing that some World Trade Center victims were "little Eichmanns," a reference to Adolf Eichmann, who helped organize the Holocaust.
Churchill's attorney, David Lane, said he expected an agreement shortly but declined to discuss specifics, including the dollar amount and whether it would mean the university would buy out Churchill's contract.
The Denver Post reported Friday that Churchill and the university had agreed on a sum for a buyout, and that it could be less than $500,000. The newspaper, citing unnamed sources, said neither side had decided whether to accept a buyout deal.
"People are talking," university regent Cindy Carlisle told The Associated Press Friday. "I'm not quite sure where the board is at this moment. To my knowledge, things are in flux."
Regents chairman Jerry Rutledge declined to comment. None of the other seven regents immediately returned calls.
Gov. Bill Owens has called on the university to fire Churchill. A spokesman said Owens had no comment on negotiations over the professor's future.
Churchill's comments were made in an essay written in the hours after the 2001 terrorist attacks. They drew little attention until last month, when they surfaced after Churchill was invited to speak at Hamilton College in upstate New York. Relatives of the dead and the governors of New York and Colorado denounced Churchill and the speech was canceled because of death threats against the professor.

The next step should be to clean out the whole place.
Owens says its the Regents' job. Bully for him.
Yea, I bet this shark already has plans for his cut of the settlement.
I think the payment should be made in lead.
your right, this is just more capitulation to the lunatics, who run the asylum.
Whatever happened to that Columbia University "ethnic" professor that called for the Mogodishu's.
I don't remember about him ever being punished, is he still helping to promote peace and tolerance in the ethnic studies field.
You see here they teach the students that irresponsibility will be rewarded. If you misbehave enough a check will be cut and you can go game another person, institution, or whatever you put in your sight. He ought to be sued or prosecuted instead. Do not send your kids to the University of Colorado.

A university should be able to fire any teacher who is underperforming or violating the school's contract or stated ethics

my understanding is the one thing tenure doesn't protect a professor from is academic fraud, seems to me CU should have a strong case on those grounds
not their fault that the academic fraud came to light as a result of the glare of the media spotlight on Churchill
or can one only surmise the university has the goods but not the guts to do it, as others have commented or maybe they don't have the goods or they aren't bothering to get the goods
I already said this on another thread the other day: Anyone, I mean ANYONE, who hires someone that they can't fire later, is just plane idiotic stupid. That includes government and the Supreme Court.
I think if I were an alumni, esp of the big money donating kind I would call up CU and said if you offer this schmuck a buyout when you could prove academic fraud and fire him for cause, you just lost my yearly donation, let the loser sue us and we'll smear his name so he won't get a job as a janitor on the local reservation, oops I mean we will unveil the truth about this fraud so good..........because $500,000 - $1 million dollars will do a lot more good on campus than going into the schmuck's pocket, not to mention this sets a bad precedent and CU has already been damaged financially by this shmuck, so they are going to need every penny
When CU Boulder buys out Ward Churchill-proving he was
correct to hold them in contempt--it is my hope that some
more honest individual will take him to court for plagerism and make certain he never recieves even an indian head penny (which is worth more than he is) for his efforts
at CU Boulder. Only then would justice be served.
I think it should be made in beads and shells. :)
9/11 Victims' families should sue his sorry ___.
