Texas titan signing off

24-year run may be ending, but he insists he's still on hunt for 'big game'

11:32 PM CST on Tuesday, March 8, 2005

By ED BARK / The Dallas Morning News

NEW YORK – No, he's not nearly ready to pack it in at CBS News.

Dan Rather is adamant if not downright defiant on that particular topic. He is, however, packing up, with his long-held office under deconstruction during his final days as anchor of the storied CBS Evening News.

He's only moving across the street and just up the block to 555 W. 57th St., where he'll join the staff of 60 Minutes after taking a month or so off. The distance is short but perilous for an aging, vulnerable news warrior who risks being an army of one.

The 73-year-old Texan's record-setting 24-year reign in "The Chair" will end after tonight's Evening News. And he's going out not on top but under the still-heavy weights of "Memogate" and prolonged lousy Nielsen ratings.

Mr. Rather, known in part for his folksy "Dan-isms" and occasional oddly self-conscious moments, chooses to resolutely look ahead, leaving others to speculate on whether he's wearing blinders.

"It's a good time for me," he said. "I've had a terrific job for 24 years. I'm going to another terrific job. I have nothing to complain about. I can't wait to get to 60 Minutes. Yes, I have friends there. And there are some people who are not friends for one reason or another. They're peers. They know going in that I'll work hard. I'll be unrelenting in pursuit of big game."

I knew he was a goner that night of the OJ car chase down the LA freeway. Dan looked positively soused and incoherent trying to provide running commentary that fateful evening.

Dan Rather has always wanted to be the only mare in heat on the stud farm.

I could not resist writing a column about Dan Rather and Richard Nixon at the NAB convention in 1972.

In case someone didn't read your words...these are excellent!

****

What the media chose to ignore, was that Nixon was nicely pointing out that Rather was perceived by his fellow broadcasters as an advocate.. not a reporter. It was the boos and cheers of the broadcasters in the audience that gave proof to that view that Rather was and is not a journalist. He is a political partisan advocating a failed political philosophy. The NAB audience response to Rather standing up to ask a question, spoke volumes about how his fellow broadcasters saw Dan Rather.

The lesson that many in the press have to learn is that the days of Cronkite and Rather are gone. The days when the media could lie and the public believed the lie are gone. The internet is great for checking facts. It is a million eyes finding a thousand lies.

Remember what George W. Bush asked Dan the afternoon of this year's State of the Union speech? 'W' asked Dan, "Are you going to retire to Texas?" When Dan replied, " Yes." The president remarked, "So am I, Dan .... In four more years!"

Do you know of any LIVE "Dan Splits" threads for Danno tonight that may encompass his newscast and that silly "tribute" show?

Thanks for that.

I thought I was saving the word "hate" for HRC, but to me, it applies for certain to Dan Rather.

He makes my skin crawl. Looking at his fraudulent pompous arrogance makes this 58 year old guy want to smack the b*stard in his face! Sorry for my anger. I hate a man who had that power to influence so many Americans each night yet continually consciously misused it!!
