Malaysia shoots cultures into space (Where’s Mecca? The spinning head of an orbiting Muslim.)

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia aims to send a piece of local culture and a famous delicacy into the heavens when its first astronaut shoots into space in 2007, reports reveal.

The National Space Agency plans to send a chef and a fashion designer to the US-based National Aeronautics and Space Administration to research how to prepare "roti canai," a flat Indian bread, to eat in space and as well as making spacesuits from traditional batik, reports said.

"We will have a programme called 'Batik in Space' and we will also launch a programme called 'Roti Canai in Space' to see how we can bring Malaysia delicacies up to the space station," the agency's director-general Mazlan Othman was quoted as saying by The Star.

"We will research ways to bring our astronauts' favourite food into space."

Russia will send Malaysia's first cosmonaut into space in October 2007 as part of a scientific mission aboard the International Space Station.

The two countries signed a deal to send Malaysia's first cosmonaut into space onboard Russia's Soyuz spacecraft during a visit to Malaysia by Russian President Vladimir Putin in August 2003.

It is part of a billion-dollar deal for 18 Sukhoi 30-MKM fighter jets.

Two Russian experts are expected to arrive in Kuala Lumpur month to help select candidates.

If the Malaysian astronaut selected is Muslim, Mazlan said they would also consult an Islamic cleric to help determine prayer times in space and the direction of the Mecca for prayers.

Further proof that the International Space Station is merely the UN office with the best view.

The real reason for this nonsense...

And we built Russia's sweet perc hotel up there, which they openly use to bribe agreement on the weapons deals which help them keep their military/industrial complex afloat.

Our tax dollars at work.

Just imagine how all the Muslims in the world would go haywire if Mecca is blown up with a large conventional weapon, if not a nuke? With no direction to pray, the Religion of Pieces might self destruct. Now can ANY WoT achieve this?

"We will have a programme called 'Batik in Space'...

This IS a joke right??? Right???? Please, Dear Lord, tell me this is a joke.

If the Malaysian astronaut selected is Muslim...

On the other hand, maybe this could be the solution....

Don't be stupid. The space station was built and is maintained by 16 different nations.

United States - NASA
Canada - CSA
Belgium
Denmark - DSRI
France - CNES
Germany - DLR
Italy - ASI
Netherlands
Norway - NSC
Spain - INTA
Sweden - SNSB
Switzerland
United Kingdom
Japan - JAXA
Russia - Roskosmos
Brazil - INPE

Because the space shuttle is out of commission, the Russian Soyuz rockets are the only means of resupplying and maintaining it. Since the Russians are strapped for cash they are willing to take tourists along as long as they are willing to pay more than their way. For you to say that this is somehow costing the US money is absurd. You should be embarrassed.

I have a better idea. Let's launch Mecca into space.

How about you try to refrain from being stupid?

The US has spent about $25.9 billion dollars on the ISS. I know we have a wide variety of international “partners” on the project, but they contributions fall somewhat short of ours.

Of course, the thing just never would have gotten up there without the $30 light dimmer switches from our Brazilian “partners.”

For you to say that this is somehow costing the US money is absurd. You should be embarrassed.

I never said that particular trip will cost us money directly. Learn to read. I said the space station cost us money. Huge amounts of money. Most of that money would have been better spent on science than “international relations”. The ISS is a corrupt boondoogle whose mission is all about UN-style feel good dopiness, with actual science and space exploration a mere footnote. If you can’t see that, you’re an idiot.

If they ever establish a moon base, which direction will they pray in?

People please. You are needlessly deriding each other when there are much easier targets for your insults right in this article. I mean look at it. They want to make a space suit out of traditional batik! What until someone tells them that their prayer rugs will be weightless.

"I never said that particular trip will cost us money directly."

Then why are you whining about it? I agree with you that the ISS is a huge waste of money but that isn't the Russians fault. They didn't spend a dime of American taxpayer money. American politicians are the ones who pi$$ed that money away.

BTW, the money would not have been better spent on science. All government spending is wasteful and corrupt. It would have been better spent by the taxpayers who earned it.

I wasn’t whining, I was complaining. You can’t whine in type.

They are using it to bribe people to purchase weapons from them, and they are doing it openly. That’s what I was objecting to.

They didn't spend a dime of American taxpayer money.

Yes, they did. After shiftless American politicians gave it to them.

BTW, the money would not have been better spent on science. All government spending is wasteful and corrupt. It would have been better spent by the taxpayers who earned it.

I agree. I was talking about that money post-confiscation.

I say we take out ISS's microwaving capability with good ol American buffalo wings, or mebbe some well placed cheese cubes, before the Indians develop space-based cuisine to its fullest potential.

We have the technology.

The only costs incurred in taking this Malaysian tourist to the space station will be his transportation costs, which are paid for by the Russians. Your complaints are idiotic.

If the US wanted to take tourists to the ISS on the space shuttle I am sure the Russians couldn't care less. That is, if the space shuttle were flying, which it isn't.
