The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

U.S. works 'day and night' to rein in al-Qaida
Full Story

WASHINGTON - Prompted by new intelligence indicating Osama bin Laden reached out to the most feared terrorist in Iraq, President Bush charged Thursday that "al-Qaida still hopes to attack us on our own soil."

"Recently, we learned that Osama bin Laden has urged the terrorist Zarqawi to form a group to conduct attacks outside Iraq, including here in the United States," Bush said at the swearing-in of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff.

The president vowed, "We're working every day and night to dismantle (bin Laden's) network and to bring him to justice."

CARNAGE AT TAMIL SERVICE IN GERMAN CHURCH

By Michael Ireland
Chief Correspondent, ASSIST News Service

GERMANY (ANS) -- A man wielding a sword has killed one person and injured at least three more at a church in Germany, police say, according to a news article posted on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) website.

Details are still emerging, and the motive for the attack that took place in the middle of a service in the Protestant church is as yet unclear.

Officers said they found "grisly" scenes after the afternoon attack in the southern city of Stuttgart. One woman is reported to be in a serious condition following the assault.

"Severed limbs were lying all round the church," a police spokeswoman said, adding that one man was arrested.

The BBC reports that Police spokesman Hermann Karpf said that the attack came as members of the local Tamil community were gathered inside the church.

"The suspected perpetrator was arrested. He is believed to be a Tamil, and the service was also a Tamil service," Mr Karpf was quoted as saying.

Police used pepper spray to overpower the man, according to Germany's Spiegel.

About 40 people are believed to have been in the church, most of them thought to be members of the Tamil community who originally come from southern India and Sri Lanka.

The BBC said counseling has been offered to those who witnessed the attack.

Number of Anti-coalition Attacks Goes Up in Afghanistan
By Gerry J. Gilmore
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 2, 2005 – The number and severity of attacks against Afghan and coalition forces have increased compared to the winter, a coalition spokeswoman noted April 2.

An increase in discoveries of improvised explosive devices in Afghanistan shows “that some in the Taliban or other anti-government insurgents will continue to try to destabilize Afghanistan through violent acts," Navy Lt. Cindy Moore, of Combined Forces Command Afghanistan, told reporters during a press briefing today.

Although some former Taliban have decided to stop fighting, "there is still a threat out there capable of IED, car bomb and small unit attacks," Moore observed.

However, she said, coalition forces will continue to aggressively pursue those seeking to destabilize Afghanistan's government.

Coalition forces depend on the assistance of the people of Afghanistan to help rid their country of old, hidden ordnance or pinpoint enemy bombs and suspected insurgents, Moore said.

The coalition "will continue working with the Afghan National Army and the government of Afghanistan to prevent the loss of innocent lives," Moore vowed. The people of Afghanistan, she continued, "are the most important and vital part of our effort to create a stable environment within Afghanistan for the upcoming elections."

Afghanistan's enemies "still want to see the Taliban stage some kind of comeback. However, the political and economic developments in Afghanistan have made it less attractive for al Qaeda and Taliban,” Moore said.

The future of Afghanistan lies upon a democratic path that the Afghan people have chosen, she said.

Islamist terrorists strike Thai airport and department store

Monday April 4, 2005 - BANGKOK, Thailand (AP):
Bomb blasts struck the main airport, a department store and a hotel in Thailand's south, killing at least two people and wounding several dozen, officials said, in attacks that raised concerns that Muslim insurgents are expanding their field of operations.

Several foreigners were among those wounded in the explosions late Sunday in Songkhla province, just north of the three southernmost provinces where an Islamic insurgency has raged since early last year, officials said.

An explosion at Hat Yai airport, the main gateway to Thailand's far south, killed two people, Songkhla Governor Somporn Chaibongyang said.

Another bomb exploded at the Carrefour department store in Hat Yai town, Somporn and other officials said.

Reports about the number of people killed in those blasts varied, with one report on ITV television saying as many as five were killed, three of them at French-owned Carrefour store.

A third blomb exploded in front of a hotel in the city of Songkhla, on the Gulf of Thailand coast not far from Hat Yai, but the governor said he had no reports of casualties from it.
