From what they said on the news last night the man's face was almost completely torn off, his testicles had been bitten off, and one of his feet had been chewed off at the ankle. The only reason he's alive is because an employee at the sanctuary shot and killed the chimps. This article clearly downplays the savagery this man suffered.

Now I'm waiting for the peta buttholes (not sarcasm) to come out and say what a senseless shooting it was because the chimps were clearly misunderstood. (sarcasm)
