I'm kind of surprised that Colson didn't include
Breaker Morant on his list. It's a great historical drama with a compelling message about the nature of humanity and warfare -- and represents what is perhaps the greatest public smack-down of the British Empire since the American Revolution.
(see the bottom of my profile page for some of the greatest "courtroom dialogue" you'll see on the Big Screen)

I'm glad you pointed out Breaker Morant as it addresses all of what you said along with the futility trying to apply concepts such as morality to something like war. A brilliant film. I would also include "Blade Runner" which also confronts the the themes of good vs. evil in an amoral world and asks what really makes us human. Blade Runner was released a year after the first Star Wars, but whereas the special effects and cinimatography from Star Wars now looks cheap and cheesy, Blade Runner holds up very well. The film noir atmosphere is excellent and the score by Vangellis is awesome. Easily my favorite SiFi film and one of my top ten all time favorites.
