I used to believe in 'realism' a la young Marx. Not anymore. Realism which defy 'ideals' only brings us either to status quo or socialism.

"...Virtually no one in Washington expected such a snowballing of events following Iraq's elections..."

Unless, of course, they have bothered to pay any attention at all in the last year to what the strategists have been saying. (Not the hand wringers... but rather, the strategists...) Some people assume that anyone who disagrees with the liberal philosophy is "Virtually no one in Washington"!

Looks like Mubarak may be facing a real challenge. I found this in Al-Ahram "...Commentators said Egypt's political reform process was dealt a deafening -- and defining -- blow this week with the arrest, on Saturday, of Ayman Nour, a two-term member of parliament and head of brand new political party Al-Ghad (Tomorrow), reports Gamal Essam El-Din. Nour, 41, has been a consistent advocate of constitutional reform, calling for curtailing the president's powers, a direct and multi-candidate poll, and a limit of two terms in office. His Al- Ghad Party sports a liberal platform advocating a free market economy, respect for the rule of law, good governance, women's empowerment, freedom of expression, secularism, an open relationship with the West and the United States, and a vibrant multi-party system..."

With the reformation of the Middle East (even if baby steps) ocurring right before our eyes... what WILL the DU'ers and other loony libs choose as their big reason for continuing their hate-fest?

Personally I think "Bush (domestic) Fascism" will still be tops on the list...

"It also won't be entirely Bush's creation: the tinder for ignition has been gathering around the stagnant and corrupt autocracies of the Middle East for years."

They still CAN'T give credit where credit is due!! Bunch of media clymers!

Virtually no one in Washington expected such a snowballing of events following Iraq's elections.

I hate to quibble but didn't Wolfowitz predict these events? Bush also alluded to what could happen in many speeches.

Who are all these 'ARABS' mentioned in this article? Are they Muslims, Coptics, or Christians, or all of the above?

As I recall, Algeria was denied a democratic vote a while back because the Islamist fundamentalist were winning.

In Bosnia the same thing, Islamist fundamentalists wanted the whole country but the EU (NATO) gave them only a third, and is in the process of giving them Kosovo, lock stock and barrel, sans Serbs and Gypsies.

This has to be looked at a lot closer. A lot of spinning going on.

Would the fanatics win in Egypt in a fair vote? If yes then we'll blow all our gains in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Millions of freedom voters in Iraq, Freedom protestors in Lebanon and other middle East countries are added to Shock and Awe. We are seeing the Bush doctrine taking hold.
