British Hypnotist Gets 90-Day Prison Term in Connecticut Sex Case
The Associated Press
Published: Feb 28, 2005 MILFORD, Conn. (AP) - A British hypnotist charged with having sex with patients under his spell and secretly videotaping the encounters was sentenced Monday to 90 days in prison and faces possible deportation to England.

Michael Johnstone, 64, had pleaded no contest to reckless endangerment and breach of peace. As part of a plea deal, he received three years in prison with all but 90 days suspended. He will not have to register as a sex offender or attend sex therapy.

"We're content with it," defense attorney Hugh Keefe said.

Authorities said Johnstone confessed to having sex and videotaping the trysts with a half-dozen patients who came to him for anxiety treatment. The incidents allegedly occurred between 2000 and 2003.

Prosecutor Kevin Lawlor said the deal avoids a trial and a drawn-out appeal on an uncertain legal issue. Johnstone was charged under a statute applying to psychotherapists; the charge has never been used on a hypnotist.

"The victims' feeling that they did not wish to proceed weighed heavily on us," he said.

Prosecutors said immigration officials are investigating and may detain Johnstone after his sentence.

You are getting sleepy, you will not press charges for what I am about to film and do.

Ah, geez, that was bad...[shakes head]. A suggestion: next time a pun like that is triggered in your mind, you will feel very, very sleepy. :)

Does give new meaning to the phrase "doctor-patient privilege." Why do I have the song "Sexual Healing" running through my head?

What's interesting is that this was a BRITISH hypnotherapist in New England. Hasn't anyone ever heard the old Duncan Spaeth quote, "The sun never sets on the British Empire because God wouldn't trust an Englishman in the dark?" Do we not have enough American hypnotherapists? Second off, did Connecticut need one more Conn artist?

I guess the most important question is this: did the therapy work? I mean, these middle-aged women patients were anxious, right? How did they feel after the therapy? I bet before they went to a therapist, 99% of them were regularly told they needed to get laid anyway.

The article here doesn't mention how they discovered it, but this one does.

Evidently the 64-year-old Johnstone was carrying on these "affairs" with three women from 2000-2002 until he had a heart attack. I suppose he was lucky he lasted as long as he did.

From your linked article: "By repeating the phrase over and over again, it will develop new biological patterns in the brain and the old ones disappear," he said.

New biological patterns indeed.

"The sun never sets on the British Empire because God wouldn't trust an Englishman in the dark?"

Great quote. Never heard it before.
All a scandalous lie though old chap.

Oh, I don't know...is there evidence that there are trustworthy Englishmen nowadays? Charles marrying his gay divorcee, Mama Liz trying to have her cake and eat it too, Tony promoting the EU plan on Iran...I don't know that I've seen any in the news to speak of. 8]

Yeah, in this case, new biological patterns like a round belly.

Remember that it is the American Anglicans that are letting the gays in. Politicians can never be trusted. I personally have had confirmation that his cabinet lied over the Blackwatch being desptached to the north of Iraq by my military intelligence friend who was in Basra perparing them to leave for months on the Governments orders.

The Queen is beyond lying. She may be rubbish at raising her family but it is because she puts her country first.

Hey, I don't mind the American Anglicans letting gays in. But they shouldn't mind being kicked out of the Anglican Communion for it if that is their stance.

We agree on politicians 100%.

Your loyalty to your Queen is admirable, but your Queen is no longer a monarch. She is a politician. I would not ask you to speak ill of her, but as an American, I'll never understand the loyalty of those who view her as a living embodiment of a nation. She's just a woman.

I knew that. Not all of us think that the mother country's common law and government are anachronistic and not worthy of study. I'm impressed with quite a few British innovations.

She's just a woman.

..........................................................

True but she is a very English/British woman of the old school. She reminds people of their own mothers and grandmothers who ran the country while their men were at war. She is ten times the politican that any of our MP's are and she is a wonderful diplomat.

I agree, can somebody explain why this was not rape. A rapist gets 90 days. What the hell?

I had that same thought when reading the article, but you have to realize that if the women involved don't want to proceed, as seems to be the case here, then there's not much of a case for rape. I imagine if the women did persevere then his penalty would've been much higher.

Let me remind the right honourable gentleman of the answer he gave some moments ago:

Politicians can never be trusted.
