Teen Shot To Death by Florida Police at High School Dance

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- A police officer fatally shot a 16-year-old boy outside a high school dance who was driving his car recklessly on campus grounds, officials said.

Jerrod Miller, a sophomore at Olympic Heights High School, died after he was shot about 9 p.m. outside a dance at another school, Delray Full Service Center, The Palm Beach Post reported.

Miller dropped off other kids at the dance and left, Delray Beach police said.

Then he returned and drove through the campus and its outdoor corridors, police said. Students were dodging his car.

An officer fired a shot in an attempt to stop the car, police said.

Relatives said Miller was a good kid who checked up on his grandmother and stayed off the streets.

''He wasn't that kind of kid. He was a good kid,'' said family spokeswoman Joelle Cornelius.

Delray Full Service Center is an alternative school for students with discipline problems.

Sunday morning, painted yellow lines marked the car's tire tracks and a small splatter of blood, scraped paint, and tire marks remained on the hallway wall.

Police declined to identify the officer or release additional information. A spokesman didn't return a phone message and page from The Associated Press.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.

That is one that the supreme court will not be able to turn loose.

Please see post 200. It is the kind of threatening rhetoric used by people with your "kill a kid" mentality that could cause people to post to DUmmies.

I'm positive the police officer didn't want to kill the kid.
They only have a split second to make a decision.

If the kid had acted responsibly in the first place, the police officer wouldn't have had to make any decision.

You act like he shot the kid for the thrill of it.

Doesn't it say "appeared to be reaching for ...."?

The way I have my duty belt, I reach for a gun, pepper spray, and a baton with the same hand on the same side. My cuffs, knife, and radio are on the other side. Others arrange their stuff differently. I was once accused of reaching for a gun when my weak side hand was reaching for my credentials.

But, of course, we all agree, if the officer HAD to shoot, he should have been able to ascertain without error every aspect of the situation. He should have been able to know whether driving down a corridor and bumping up on exposed support pillars was dangerous or not, he should have been able, in fact, to wait and see if the driver hurt anybody, then, if he did, the officer should have re-wound time and stopped the driver with a deft shot through an open window that then ricocheted off the mirror into the ignition switch and stopped the car without hurting anybody or doing any more damage than could be fixed with a recycled ignition switch and a bobby pin. THIS sumbidge was negligent and trigger happy, fer shur!

Why can't we get cops like they had when I was a boy?

Congrats though, you found further evidence that supported your assertion. That's called "luck" which I would have had as well if I was so hot to jump on it.

I'm glad you aren't working as an investigator. They tend to want evidence before they make a conclussion.

"He wasn't that kind of kid. He was a good kid," said family spokeswoman Joelle Cornelius.

You know, it's getting tiresome hearing this said. The very fact that he did it indicates that he was indeed "that kind of kid." If his parents would get their fat butts out from in front of the TV and inquire as to his activities, perhaps they would have known "what kind of kid" he was.

My opinion is free. I could care less if YOU agree with it or not.

You seem to take the side of a punk kid who is in detention school riding around in a car that might possibly injure other kids over a police officer.

Hatred of the police makes me suspect you might be a DUer, along with your cursing and bad spelling and poor sentence structures.

BTW - if you can read or research, check out http://www.palmbeachpost.com/localnews/content/news/special_reports/delrayshooting/.

Seems the ROOKIE officer was suspended, the kid was Black, the attorney says the kid posed no threat. Just because the kid was Black, doesn't mean you are a bigot; just because the cop was a rookie doesn't mean he was wrong. The officer has a presumption of lawful act on his side. Lawyers make up BS - but I still think the cop over reacted. Also, the statement you used, "punk" was not seated anywhere else, other than by you. What was your reference"?

As charming as that sounds, I don't see how anyone could really bring themselves to sue parents who've just lost a teenage son. I mean, a little compassion, please.

In modern America the difference between a police officer and a deputy is semantic. Sheriff's deputies perform the exact same duties outside the city limits. I don't see any merit in your suggeston at all.

Sheriffs are officers of a court.Police are creatures of some city council. The police have(or should have)no more authority than the citizens.Take their guns and badges away.Or maybe federal, state and county law enforcement is not enough. How may layers of law enforcement do you think we need?

False. That would have been true, say 150 years. Now, I'll grant you that the office of Sheriff varies from county to county, and more so state to state, but the office of Sheriff is no longer limited (in most jurisdictions) to carrying out court orders.

In Texas for example, you'll find that especially in rural ares, the day to day operation of the sheriff's office to be indistiguished from that of a police department. From traffic citations to domestic abuse calls, the job is exactly the same.

Here, the office that's closest to the sheriff model you're holding up would the constabularly. The constables in Texas still function primarily as officers of the court, and not law enforcement. Here we have police, sheriff's, constables, state police, and rangers.

All that being said, I'm guessing you're one of those cop haters.
