To remedy this: (1) teachers have to start teaching again, by (God forbid!) rote memorization and drills; (2) kids have to start deconstructing their language visually to understand its logic; and, (3) we need better educated people in broadcasting who can write correctly and ad-lib (or at least read) proper English.
Newspaper and magazine editors whose command of the English language is sufficient to spot the following errors:
"His remarks inferred that he did not like the President's position."
"Leaders from ten countries comprised the economic summit."
"His comments included several quotes from Jonh Kennedy's speeches."
I still diagram sentences. It's the best way I can satisfy myself that something is or is not a correct sentence.
