Schwarzenegger leads early poll for re-election; Dems back Rob Reiner [Meathead]

California voters are in favor of another actor to face actor-turned-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 2006 election.

Actor-director Rob Reiner leads a Democratic field that also includes Attorney General Bill Lockyer, state Treasurer Phil Angelides and Controller Steve Westly, the Field Poll said Friday.

But more than 20 months before California's next gubernatorial election, 56 percent of the 800 registered voters questioned said they were very inclined or somewhat inclined to support Schwarzenegger. Forty-two percent said they were not too inclined or not at all inclined to vote for him.

When matched against the Democrats, the Republican governor got 52 percent of the vote compared to 37 percent for Reiner, 35 percent for Angelides, 34 percent for Lockyer and 33 percent for Westly.

Reiner got support from 20 percent of the 376 Democrats and independents who said they planned to vote in next year's Democratic primary. Lockyer got 17 percent, Angelides 12 percent and Westly 8 percent. Forty-three percent said they were undecided.

Actor-director Rob Reiner...

He'll be to California what his meathead character was to Archie.

Although I wouldn't wish it on the good people of California it would be amusing to watch "Governor Meathead" have to make the real world fiscal decisions necessary of any governor.

If he wins, I wonder if Spinal Tap will reunite to headline at the inaugural ball.

"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but you are still a meathead."

I guess from now on California will only elect entertainment personalities. Why don't the Dems run the cast from Queer Eye. Five candidates for the price of one.

California is a lost cause as far as I am concerned... But it would be fun to see meathead as a governor, just to see what he does.

California needs a lot of 'common sense' to get out of their problems, and that is something the state (Dems in particular) do not seem to have.

Let's just dispense with the election, put them (Schwarzenegger and Meathead) into a ring, and the one who walks out wins...

Glad I'm not a Dem. 'Course, not being one, it's very tough for me to step back and look at the field of possibles, and visualize ANY of them as an acceptible governor. Ugh.

Name recognition is a big factor for many voters, so I would guess that Meathead would have a good chance to get the nomination.

Hi All-

"...He'll be to California what his Meathead character was to Archie [Bunker]..."

Rob Reiner won't be able to "hide" either way since his real life is even more liberal than his absurd hippy Meathead role. Thank goodness he didn't play a law-abiding, pro-RKBA, conservative character on teeeveee.

It really started with electing George Murphy to the United States Senate in 1964.

Years before the recall I used to kid my mom (who lived in California) that her next gubernatorial race would be the Terminator vs. Meathead. She used to say, "California is crazy, but not THAT crazy!"
