President Bush continued his European trip today as he spoke in Bratislava, Slovakia to an enthusiastic crowd. The President later met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and both later spoke to the media. The First Couple also gave their best wishes to Pope John Paul II, who is recovering from emergency surgery. Enjoy your daily dose of Dubya!

Somebody needs to tell this to my church's missionary to Russia. Our missionary has been to those Orthodox churches and according to him, the people there worship the statues of the saints. Somebody needs to tell Putin that he should not put people in jail for not agreeing with him. He won't even allow dissenting news media there. The media is purely state run. He has taken over the deciding of the governors. The people cannot even vote for their own governors anymore. I am not going to question his faith, but if he is a christian, he should live it more.

Oh .. how I wish Ari was running White House briefings again .. I miss him and his special gifts SO much. He had all the qualities necessary to perform in that position flawlessly, and with humor. Good, good man. I hope his new career gives him much satisfaction and reward. His sterling White House service set a high bar for excellence

I have been very involved in Russian Orthodoxy, to the point of learning the Old Slavonic language that the liturgical music is sung in. I can assure you that the orthodox do not worship statues. They venerate, or hold sacred, icons which are paintings of Christ, Mary or various saints. The image (not the wood or paint) is considered to be the actual presence of the person depicted. In a way it is like looking at a loved one through a window. It is the person in the icon is worshiped, or communicated with, the painting itself is venerated as something holy. The Greek Eastern Orthodox is very similar in their beliefs, just different ethnically. I have not heard of Putin putting people in jail for disagreeing with him

It's been in the news. He had reporters who were saying good things about his rival when he was running for reelection put in jail. He also had newspapers shut down who were not pro-Putin.

Also, our missionary has been "visited" by government officials who question him on what he talks about in the bible. These "visitors" would listen to him talk at a church meeting and then tell him that he could not say it anymore. If he wants to stay in Russia, he has to refrain from talking about things.

I agree with you, LDK! Sometimes people try so hard to see the good in others that they invent it, or don't see the darker side.

I'm not saying Putin is perfect or that he isn't making some mistakes. But I do think that if GW sees enough good and possibilities in Putin that it is worth his friendship with him, then I have faith in his judgement of the man. I am sure they have spoken of many things in private that none of us will ever know. He said he saw into his soul, and I believe him. Perhaps we would do better to pray for him and that GW's friendship will be an influence on him and his leadership. If anyone can bring out the good in people, it is our wonderful President.

That is right. We have to be very discerning. We cannot just accept things at face value.

You are right, we need to make sure we keep praying for President Bush, and pray that he has godly judgement and discernment on who he trusts.

We'd all been discussing the special relationship the President has with Eastern Europe. And I ran across that picture and caption. Timely, huh?

Addressing a packed Hviezdoslavovo Square in Bratislava, Slovak Republic, President Bush today hailed images of "jubilant Iraqis dancing in the streets last month, holding up ink-stained fingers."

"In recent times, we have witnessed landmark events in the history of liberty: A Rose Revolution in Georgia, an Orange Revolution in Ukraine, and now, a Purple Revolution in Iraq."

Did you get the one where the President and First Lady are sitting, and she's got a pale pink sweater on, and he's laughing? (It's GREAT!)

There were three pics sent out, and we got two....the one posted, and the one I just described.

I'm not sure how they decided which to send whom, but we got one as a couple, and I got one as an individual.

The point the President made yesterday when he was asked about it, is that Putin says when he disagrees with the President, and says when he agrees.

He knows where he stands, and he appreciates that............and he said that is still true.

I don't think for one minute that George W. Bush is deceived by Vladimir Putin.

If anyone can bring out the good in people, it is our wonderful President.

I agree, Merlinator.

Our President doesn't see Putin as a caricature.....KGB guy, unredeemable.

When they first met, they talked about their daughters, Putin talked about the faith he had because of his mother......there is more to him than meets the Western eye, and the President has seen it "up close and personal." (But, of course, he's savvy enough not to trust him completely).

Putin is being pressured, has a questionable past, and has made some very bad decisions......BUT........yesterday, our President directed the entire conversation to democracy, and took Putin to task for the lack of free press, and the jailing of dissidents.

One person is leading this world toward freedom, and the others will follow. Putin thinks of Bush as a friend, and that friend has redirecting his thinking back towards the democratic reforms he promised.
