Vanity: Please help with my kid's science fair project
T MInus Four

My seventh grader is doing a science fair project involving "handedness". She needs a larger sample for her data. If you would like to help, please do the following: clasp your hands together with your fingers intertwined. Report which thumb is on top and if you are right or left handed. Thanks for your help! Standing outside the grocery store didn't work, even with tootsie rolls as a thank you. People were too afraid we were selling something!

Later, after the thumb wrestling contest, I rested both thumbs against each other

OK, that image cracked me up. I pictured two thumbs, tuckered out from wrestling, leaning against each other, sweating and wheezing. :-P

I did it and my left was on top and I'm right-handed. My husband did it and his right was on top and he is also right-handed.

I have the solution. The thumb on top is not determined by thumbs- it's determined by the position of the index finger. It's apparently a random effect. The right thumb will be above the left thumb when the right index is above the left, and reverse. There is the azimuth, elevation and range angles of approach between your hands that determine where they are comfortable together.

I tried this 20 times with my eyes closed both in front and behind my back. Your more powerful side will lead the weaker side in whatever arrangement is appropriate in that instant.

Don't discount the elbow and shoulder rotation and the fact there are 10 things in opposing force coming together. That makes it random.

Bob!

Right handed, left thumb on top. (I might also add that, although I'm admittedly anal rententive, trying the right thumb on top is just not the way God intended it.)
