I wish sometimes we were more monolithic, but it can't happen. it is what gives this site it's vibrant personality:-)
We we criticize everyone in our community when something comes up that does not meet some standard of approval, but it generally stays within our community and if found to be bogus we ferret it out and expose the lie.
A outsider might well find that process a bit confusing, to say the least.
But when the NYT, WaPo or some media giant returns the favor, it is out there for everyone to see, hear and misunderstand. Mostly all non members.
I think that is what caused the shock we experienced.

We conservatives have infinately more class than the liberals. They'll tolerate any flotsam and jetsam that floats through their party. Look at the protests for the Republican convention and what they'll tolerate. Look at the new DNC chair for the love of God. I think a lot of this 'eating our own' comes from a desire to be the best we can be. It's a bit misguided, but it can be overcome.
