Nine out of 10 calls to his house are from "crackpots," he said, ever since a plate of cookies and a case in La Plata County Small Claims Court turned life upside down.

Yes she should. I don't agree with the harassing phone calls. However, she will learn that there are better ways to handle conflicts. There are a number of things she could have done differently that would not have resulted in court and the ensuing media attention.

Are you sure that is why they never paid?

Would you pay the bill if you were in their situation? I suspect that they were advised by an attorney to not pay unless they got some sort of waiver as a result. As others have pointed out, paying the bill with no release or waiver opens one up to litigation as it is a tacit admission of guilt (which in my opinion there was absolutely NO GUILT on the part of the girls).

Mrs. Young may have been minding her own business on that night, but the fact that she suffers from an irrational neurotic fear of intruders is her problem, not the girls. Going onto a property that does not have a "no trespassing" sign and knocking on a door should not make one liable for the irrational reactions of someone inside the house. This is a free country, and unless one explicitly announces by the clear posting of a sign that visitors are not allowed, one's porch is generally not recognized as off-limits to others in the community (even at 10:30pm). Teenage girls performing an act of kindness that is in no way illegal should not be subject to liability due to the irrational response of someone in the house for which they have no control over.

She is a poster child for Liberalism and reacted in a typical liberal hysterical manner over nothing.

Anyone not afraid of their shadow simply goes to the door looks around picks up the cookies and goes and eats them sending the girls a thank you the next day.

But noooo why not make a federal case of it tie up valuable court resources and try and soak the parents. Classic dogooder at play.

I save my kindness for those deserving of it thus no nutbags need apply.

Chances are her neighbors know what kind of nutbag she is and avoid her like the plague leaving her to enjoy the company of the homeless, parasitic and other losers. Probably still has the Kerry/Edwards signs in her yard too.

I think it was stated that the girls were lucky they weren't shot. I don't think anyone really advocated shooting anyone.
