Durango - Herb Young turned the telephone off again Tuesday after it rang at 12:40 a.m.

One recent caller had told him that "you should be found dead in a ditch."

Nine out of 10 calls to his house are from "crackpots," he said, ever since a plate of cookies and a case in La Plata County Small Claims Court turned life upside down.

I tend to fight for the underdog. Are you one of the phone callers to the Youngs? You sound like the type of person who kicks people while they are down.

"Remember, most rural folks don't hide their vehicles, ring the doorbell at 10:30 pm and refuse to show themselves or identify themselves at the door."

They didn't hide their vehicle - they were on foot deliverying cookies. They didn't refuse to show themselves - they knock on the door and moved on to their next delivery.

Other people in the neighborhood got cookies that night also. They knew who did it and thanked the girls for the delivery, and supported them when the Young's sued.

I believe it was the girls that started and caused all this.

I believe it was the girls that started and caused all this. The girls thought of it. Mrs. Young was at home minding her own business. The girls should have done the same.

You are surely one of the people that Hannity mentioned yesterday.

What they wanted and what they got were two different things. They were in the wrong so it wasn't up to them to call the shots. They thought so but the court said otherwise.

"...and likely didn't make her sign the agreement (at least I haven't read that the court did that anyway)."

I agree. That waiver should be incorporated into the court order.

So the teenagers mother offered but never paid. Interesting.

The critical part that you left out was the offer was rejected by Mrs. Young. That is why the families never paid. I think that is a pretty significant detail to leave out. That is even more interesting.

I thought this Web site was to post whatever we felt - regardless of who the post was addressed to.

Are you infringing on my rights to free speech? Speaking up makes you a nut case? Oh yeah that's what everyone on this thread is calling Mrs. Young for giving her side of the story.

" The critical part that you left out was the offer was rejected by Mrs. Young."

Also left out was the full amount Mrs. Young was asking for. The family said they would pay if some conditions were agreed to, yet Mrs. Yougn decided to go to court and ask for much more $$$$.

Well, unfortuntely the person at fault doesn't get to set the conditions, do they?

What is reasonable to me and you apparently wasn't reasonable to the Youngs. It's all relative.

It is interesting, but if it had been me in that situation, I wouldn't have gone as far as a lawsuit. Of course, if it had been me, I wouldn't have needed a visit to the emergency room because somebody pounded on my door late at night and left a plate of cookies. Although I wouldn't have eaten the cookies, either...

I definitely would NOT have eaten the cookies.
I wouldn't have had an anxiety attack since I'm not prone to them but Mrs. Young was.
I also wouldn't have gone so far as a lawsuit but I would definitely have made the teenagers pay for the hospital bill -- either by their babysitting/job money or working it out by cleaning and other chores. My children have learned how to be responsible. They would NOT have taken the radio show money.

Actions have consequences.
