WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Elizabeth Cheney, the daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites), will become the second-ranking U.S. diplomat for the Middle East, the State Department said on Monday.
Cheney, who previously worked in the department's Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs and left to work on her father's 2004 re-election campaign, will become the bureau's principal deputy assistant secretary of state.
This is the bureau's second ranking position and deputizes for the assistant secretary of state for near eastern affairs, the top U.S. diplomat for the Middle East.
State Department spokesman Richard Boucher told reporters Cheney would also serve as "coordinator for Broader Middle East and North Africa Initiatives" -- a U.S.-backed idea to try to spread democratic and economic reform in the region.
"Her duties will include a focus on U.S. bilateral and multilateral efforts to support freedom, democracy and expanded education and economic opportunities in the broader Middle East and North Africa," he said.
I stand corrected :)
Yes, Liz Cheney is a lovely young woman, wife and mother. I think she resembles her dad so much. I loved watching them all walk as a family in the Inaugural parade. It was so refreshing to see them all out there walking, laughing, smiling, waving and encouraging the little girls to do the same. Liz will definitely be a credit to her position. Yes, the Cheney's just keep on giving of themselves. God I am so proud to have this responsible, exceptional group of people in our White House. They will be a hard act to follow...that's for sure. God bless Liz and continued best wishes to her and her entire family.
I don't know... I am sure she is more than qualified. I don't think that Dr. Rice would jeopardize her integrity for favoritism.
From what I have heard from her, Liz is well-educated and quite articulate.
I hope we remember your words when some here bash a gay person simply for being gay, which does happen,( not you). Tolerance and compassionate conservatism should not be oxymorons........now if they are activist gays pushing an agenda, then flame them..........
This is not a good idea. IMO
If Clinton-Gore tried to pull this I'd be the first to holler nepotism- even if she's pretty, and likeable.
Isn't this against the (nepotism) law going back to the post- Bobby Kennedy era?
Let's get a list of her qualifications together and then make a judgement. She shouldn't be disqualified either based on genetics.
BTW, the purpose of this post was to start a healthy debate. You bring up a good point. We should not be "cheerleaders" just because she is the daughter of the VP, but rather, because she is the best person for the job.
I caught your sarcasm too and thought it rather funny.
Thanks for this post. I had not heard it before I saw the headline here. This is terrific. She is a very talented communicator and smart as can be.
Pretty and likable?
I take it you aren't familiar with Liz Cheney, her qualifications or her style.
She is a terrific asset. If a dem had a qualified child I would accept it. The problem is when someone like Chelsea got to sit in meetings and the other countries actually complained about it. I don't see a double standard. I see a standard that I apply fairly. I can't help it if Republicans and dems don't.
I think he is just making fun of Kerry and Edwards as they pointedly referenced her sexuality during the campaign.
She can't be any worse the the incompetents in charge for the past generation. That's not my objection.
Isn't there a law, though-for real?
What does the anti-nepotism law say?
The times I've heard her, I thought she was very well spoken. I don't think that acorn falls far from the tree (in this case, 2 of them - both parents are very bright, well read, and articulate). I'm excited about it. I just hope she doesn't have to travel there.
Get it right.

****Our VP's name is spelled: CHENEY ***not*** CHANEY.
Get it right.****
Well said I always worry about people when they use that spelling.
Since you and others insist on stressing her qualifications, let's take a look.
I don't see much on that long resume` about specializing in Arab studies or understanding the Arab mind. She's a political hack with a degree. Big deal. If her last name weren't Cheney she'd be rejected.
Not exactly an expert.
We're becoming more and more like a banana republic, with the promotion of family members into our government.
Maybe in 2009 Hillary will put her sleazy brother Hugh in charge of our Middle East policy. You'd all be screaming, then.
I think its pretty damn presumptuous of VP Cheney to pull this.
