Red Cross Head Discusses Guantanamo Inmates with Bush

Tue Feb 15, 2005 10:06 AM ET

GENEVA (Reuters) - Jakob Kellenberger, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, has raised concerns with President Bush about detainees at Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere, an ICRC spokesman said on Tuesday.

Kellenberger, who held talks with Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Washington on Monday, was due to meet Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Tuesday, he added.

Asked whether Kellenberger had discussed prisoners held at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, with Bush, ICRC spokesman Florian Westphal in Geneva told Reuters: "Concerns relating to detainees were one issue discussed."

He declined to comment further, adding: "We feel bilateral talks are the best way generally to obtain results."

ICRC officials regularly visit prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, which holds hundreds of terror suspects detained during the 2001 U.S. war to oust al Qaeda and the ruling Taliban from Afghanistan and in other operations.

A leaked ICRC memorandum last November accused the U.S. military of using tactics "tantamount to torture" on inmates there, but the Pentagon strongly denied allegations of abuse.

In a brief overnight statement, the Swiss-based humanitarian agency said Kellenberger and Bush had discussed "ICRC concerns regarding U.S. detention" as well as armed conflicts worldwide and ICRC relief operations. It gave no details.

The agency said it welcomed the opportunity to "raise these issues at the highest level and looks forward to strengthening its confidential dialogue with U.S. authorities."

Kellenberger had also raised three "priority contexts" with Bush and Rice -- the troubled Darfur region of Sudan, Iraq and Afghanistan, according to spokesman Westphal.

"tantamount to torture"

[sarcasm]Could someone explain "tantamount to torture" to me? God forbid are we depriving these men of being told bedtime stories and being tucked in before they go nite nite.

Is being beheaded by masked Islamofascists in front of a video camera for your family to see "tantamount to torture", or are they just expressing their religious beliefs?[/sarcasm]

When they finish there would ya think the Red Cross might want to check on the 40,000 or so held in Castro's Gulag?

To hell with the prisoners at Gitmo. They are murderers and killers. Release them and they will do it again. Put em up against a wall and shoot them. They cut off the heads of their prisoners. An eye for an eye is good enough for me.

Is this Kim Jong speaking or the International Red Cross?

I trust that President Bush raised concerns with Mr. Kellenberger about his inserting himself into a situation - the conditions under which spies and pirates are being detained - which does not concern the International Red Cross.

Strange how we never hear from the Red Cross and in the media on the torture in the prisons in other parts of the world, especially the Middle East...does anyone ever hold the Red Cross accountable??? I remember my uncles (7 of them) who fought in WWII saying that the Red Cross always gave special treatment to the officers. They also said they would never give them a penny because of the way they treated the enlisted men during the war.

tooo funny... i always laughed at that phrase and would substitute the word REALITY for stress.

stressed out sounds so much milder than saying "It's TOOO much reality for me man!!! I can't take it."

Why I think the Gitmo boys should be given weekly pork barbeques, all the beer they can drink, non-stop MTV and have all female guards wear hotpants and skimpy tanktops. Wait that's tantamount to torture for these guys.
