It is true, as Hathout notes, that all societies have domestic violence; however, Islamic societies have it enshrined in their eternal word of Allah, unlike, say, the New Testament, which does not have even a faint hint of it. With such divine endorsement from Allah, can Islam reform on this matter? In some Christian circles it is believed that the Bible encourages husbands to discipline their wives by spanking them. I was shocked when a newly married friend, someone I had known from childhood, proudly showed me a paddle he used to discipline his wife.
