You raise a fair point, IMHO. I certainly would never say that Iraq has assured a democratic future for itself. It will be a rocky road and the future is very much in doubt.

Still, I think it's telling that Couric seems clearly to be hoping for the worst - in her mind, anything is fair game so long as it hurts the hated Republicans.

A number of commentators have mentioned that because even the Shiites didn't get a majority, there will have to be a certain amount of good, old-fashioned horse-trading. If the Iraqis can manage that -- as opposed to good, old-fashioned murdering other factions -- they have a fair chance. (Hoping and praying!)
