In true punk rock fashion, Green Day tested the censors at the Grammy Awards on Sunday _ and the censors were ready. The Bay Area rockers, on a career high with their "American Idiot" album, added a shot of rock 'n' roll adrenaline by performing the title cut. The disc won the Grammy for best rock album.
The song includes a prominent obscenity in one of the lyrics, but the censors were plainly prepared and neatly excised the word. They couldn't delete, however, singer Billie Joe Armstrong's pointed political reference to not wanting to be part of a redneck agenda.
Green Day was energetic and confident, a band that's grown up but hasn't left its punk roots behind: witness the smoothly practiced leap and landing from the riser by drummer Tre Cool. And Armstrong was a live wire.
By the way, what's up with trios that expand to quartets onstage but pretend the other member doesn't exist? At least the camera operators didn't completely ignore the mysterious fourth member on guitar.
Well, if you don't respond to the right post, the person to whom you are communicating a thought will not see your post...
well my post wasn't aimed specifically at any one person...just a comment in general...sorry for any confusion
Eddie must be a Virgo ;)
So am I?
I've never heard of "Pinhead Gunpowder". I'm not really into that type of music anymore, but I'll search some of it out to give it a listen. IMO right now, I'd be suprised if they didn't at least say that the Ramones were a big influence.
Who is Norah Jones?
Um.
I like Norah Jones's voice.
For some reason, when I hear her sing, she gets me all hot and bothered.
Here's a pic:
Still not impressed!
to separate paragraphs. To BOLD something do this. To BOLD something do this. Thanks, Eddie, but that is too much information for me, I'll give it a try, I am not that old, but don't do well with details.
I disagree, there are lots of great new artists making really fine new music, just as there are lots of older artists (Loretta Lynn, for instance) who can no longer get a major label deal but who are putting out terrific music on independent labels. The problem is that the big-time music industry used to look for the very best musical talents (from Sinatra to Clapton to Aretha) and promote them, expecting that record buyers would appreciate their obviously superior quality. Sure, there was always some garbage, but that wasn't the primary output. Today, it is: filthy-mouthed rappers, manufactured pop stars, cookie-cutter hip-hop that just rips off riffs from older records made by actual musical talents, etc.
Most of what I heard on the Grammys tonight was tuneless, moronic, cliched, second- and third-hand, downright unlistenable rubbish, churned out by people who, 25 years ago, wouldn't have been considered talented enough to get a job in a recording studio cleaning the toilets. And by the way: I work in radio and have spent over 30 years in recording studios, so I know whereof I speak. Any competent bar band probably has more musical talent than half the people I saw on CBS tonight
I didn't watch it, but from listening to my daughter's music, I know that there is no TALENT there. Just cursing, which some think is cool??????? No melody, they don't know anything about music, at least in the 60's and 70's they knew about melodies. Wake up goof balls, can you write music?
singer Billie Joe Armstrong's pointed political reference to not wanting to be part of a redneck agenda.
The country acts were actually quite good. I actually watched over an hour of the program. I remember a few years bck they only had CRAP RAP....I turned off immediately.
As far as the "new" rockers, never heard of any of them. Frankly, I'd rather watch a rerun of a Grammy show in the 60's or 70's than any "live" one. That was back when music was music.

I agree with you, the so called artists of today have no talent, no musical abilities, no heart! Do any of you so called artists know anything about music? I would assume that the Music Departments of the Universities have failed you?
I'll see your Black Flag, Husker Du and Minor Threat, and raise you with The Buzzcocks, Uk Subs, The Damned, and the Pistols - and they're all trumped by the MC5 and The Ramones and Iggy.
All great bands, and Green Day has earned their place in the lineage, as far as I'm concerned - punk covers a lot of ground these days, it's been around so long now.
Of course...but I will not be the last person confused with your posts and you will get some angry replies.
Look for threads that are entitled something like "HTML Sandbox". There will be friendly folks there who will take you through the basic HTML codes so your posts will conform to the "standard" freeper style.
Ask Ms. G (Geezerette).
I helped her a few years ago and she got the hang of it fast.
Its also quite fun!
In the mean time....may I suggest that you pull only the part of what someone has posted that you wish to comment on. (Not their whole post...only what is relevant to what you
[Put that part in brackets]
Then make white space before your comments.
Have fun freeping....it's my neighborhood bar (and much better for me than drinking.... ha ha)

Thank you Eddie, I will strive to make better posts, I noticed that some tonight did not do what I wanted them to do? Good for Geezerette, but I am not there yet, younger than you think. Will look at your information again. I hope this one works right. I always include the whole post so I don't take people out of context, such as the Washington Post did today.
The "so called artists" that the major labels shove down your throats on the Grammy's, yes, they can be a talentless bunch, especially the hip hop crowd, they've simply exhausted their genre, and they're becoming cartoons of themselves, the angel sketch last night proved it - the music is less important now than the image. But it's okay, it's the same thing that happened to metal in the 90's, to grunge after that, then boy bands - the music industry goes in cycles, and right now it's in the valley of the cycle.
Trust me, tho, there are PLENTY of great musicians and artists out there, on indie labels. That's where the action is these days, all the good stuff went back underground for a while, it'll come back some day. There are some great, solid, heavy hitting hard rocks acts out there just starting out, that you will never hear on Clear Channel radio stations and on MTV...at least for now. There's great singers and songwriters out there, plying their trade in small clubs, on self-produced albums and small indie labels.
Heck, even a lot of the great bands of the 70's, 80's, 90's, and even the 00's are on smaller labels now, after being dropped from the majors. The majors have been dropping acts like crazy with all the mergers and such, and the way of the future will be an act will progress and grow in the indies, and then get picked up by the majors when they're a proven success - much like baseball, you now have the minors, and "the show". The majors are'nt interested in molding new acts and letting the mature over several releases - hell, they only release a new album by a lot of their top acts every 2 years or so, when back in the day, a Led Zeppelin, or Elton John could release on, two, or even three albums a year, and tour between.
No, to get the good stuff these days you have to avoid Clear Channel, MTV, and the Grammys, and start digging into the indy labels, and your local clubs. Even Apple is wise to this, and is adding indy label albums to the iTunes store, there's some GREAT stuff on there from bands you never heard of, and never will hear of if you rely on the media these days.
Please don't do that.

Quoting the whole message means that your point gets lost...it takes up too much space and, to be honest, it's downright annoying.
I meant to post to you not ByDesign.

Most of the over-hyped groups on the Grammys are talent-deficit flashes in the pan whose only saving grace is that they will be back waitressing or tending bar within a couple of years. Look at Britney: what has she had, four albums? And it's obviously pretty much over: sales falling, creative stagnation, moving off to crank out babies with her trailer trash hubby. Now, look at the groups of the past, like one of my faves, the Kinks. When their fourth album came out, they'd been recording for less than two years, they were still doing R&B covers, and most of their greatest work, from "Lola" to "Come Dancing," was still years or decades ahead of them. Can you imagine most of the people you saw at the Grammys still being around 15 years from now and showing that kind of artistic growth?
The only band I saw that impressed me was Los Lonely Boys: they could actually write catchy songs and play and sing them live. That used to be the minimum requirement for professional musicians, but now, it's like witnessing a miracle.

Thanks for your info about finding decent music, but these days I just listen to talk shows, there are no more real artists that can perform decent music. Talk shows are fine with me.
By the way, watching you wild and wacky Republicans talk about gettin' your collective grooves on is PRICELESS!...
Hell, we probably got it on a hell of a lot harder than a bunch of pansy socialists, 'Rats, and Libs... The main point being that we knew when to back off and become productive members of society.
